country", the leader of the university lecturers' union has warned.

In a scathing attack on the government, Sally Hunt, the general secretary of
the University and College Union (UCU), says the coalition is a "fundamental

In a speech to delegates at the UCU's annual conference in Harrogate, she will
say that while all public services are facing cuts, universities and colleges
have been "singled out for special treatment", with spending slashed by 17%
over the next two years. UCU represents more than 120,000 academics and other
staff.

"The cost to our country of this attack on education will be substantial,"
Hunt will say, adding: "When you weigh the cost of keeping kids on benefit
versus giving them a chance in life, it is ignorance that is the expensive
option, not education."

She will tell delegates the UK is at risk of losing its place as a world
leader for education.

For example, Reza Namin, the superintendent of schools in Westbrook, Maine, told the New York Times that, while she couldn?t justify paying a Chinese language instructor in the face of a $6.5 million budget deficit, she was able to continue offering the course by turning to the online, non-profit Virtual High School Global Consortium.

The increasing reliance on digital education programs has drawn criticism from teachers and unions who claim the shift towards online learning is purely budgetary and an effort to pay fewer teachers? salaries. The argument could gain particular traction in Idaho, where a recent bill raided a fund used to pay educators to purchase laptops for every student in the state. So many people bought the album that Amazon's servers had trouble fulfilling all orders. To make it right, Amazon offered the sale price again, on Thursday.

Ann Powers spoke to Morning Edition host Renee Montagne about the implications of selling an album for a sliver of the price people are used to paying.

Ann says it's important to remember that Lady Gaga "fires on all cylinders." "The physical product of an album is merely one aspect of her overall campaign to dominate popular culture," she says. "Call it a big part of her marketing plan, but not necessarily the absolute center of her art."

Though charging a tiny fraction of what albums usually cost might appear to be a fan-friendly move that would dovetail nicely with Gaga's image as a woman of the people, she didn't have any control over Amazon's price. Ann says Gaga's fans would pay anything to get her latest album ? the 99 cent price is more likely to pique the interest of casual listeners.

Gaga's retail plan for this album involved thousands of different retailers, according to her manager. She debuted songs on the online game Farmville, for example, and people buying a cell phone from Best Buy last week got a copy of Born This Way with their purchase.
