Borders, which currently employs about 10,700 employees, filed for Chapter 11 Feb. 16. A few days later, it began closing sales for 200 underperforming stores, including locations at The Block at Orange, The District at Tustin Legacy, Yorba Linda and La Habra. That was nearly one-third of the 642 stores it had on Jan. 29.
That round of closures cost 134 jobs in O.C. In 2010, the chain closed 45 stores. During 2009, the bookseller closed 219 stores, including Borders Express in Westminster Mall and The Village at Orange. Also around the same time, it closed the Borders Books and Music located across from Triangle Square in Costa Mesa.
