Alan Cumming Tunes in music therapy

The actor Scottish and the voice behind the Gutsy Smurf helps the cancer patients through music, advocacy.

Scottish actor Alan Cumming, which doubles the kilt-port, Smurf Gutsy Braveheart-pipeline in the upcoming film the Smurfs, made an appearance for special guest since April at the bedside of Sal, a chemotherapy patient at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. There, he sang songs in a music therapy program.

"It was a lesson of humility and intense," said Cumming, 46, also starring in the CBS hit The Good Wife series. He played an instrument called a drum of the ocean, which mimics the sound of crashing waves, as 52 years Sal sings songs of the Gospel by Elvis Presley.

Out of "his life had been whack with his illness," said Cumming, but here, it was the song and chat. For him, music therapy was a conduit to open and see things from a more inspiring way. ?

Music therapy is used to relieve pain of patients and the anxiety and also helps reduce the associated chemotherapy nausea and vomiting, according to the American Cancer Society. In recent decades, it has become a common part of the comprehensive care centres across the United States, including Sloan-Kettering cancer in a broad sense.

Cumming and Sal were brought together by Angel Foundation of the N.Y.C. Gabrielle base for research on Cancer (www.gabriellesangels.org), founded in 1996 by Denise Rich, a songwriter nominated to the Grammy, after the death of his daughter of myeloid leukemia. Angel of Gabrielle funds research for therapies conventional and integrative of leukemia, lymphoma and related cancers. Grant from the Foundation Fund supports the Sloan-Kettering music therapy program.

"I was really moved by what the Organization," said Cumming, who recently became an Ambassador for Angel of the Foundation. In this role, it will help raise awareness of the need for research on cancer.

Cumming is eager to participate again in music therapy. "I was quite knew what to expect," he said. "Many emotions so both.". In a depressing place, where people are so sick, here we are with a sing. It is the power of music on a basic level. ?
