How To Choose A Moving Truck

If you are moving, then you know what a pain in the you know what it can be. Everybody absolutely dreads that call from a friend asking to help move. Even if it involves all the pizza you can eat and all the beer you can drink, most of us would rather watch a chess match on TV than help a friend move.

But as they say, if you've got to move, then you've got to move. And that means you've got to make some decisions. First of all, how are you going to get all your stuff from your old house to your new house? You could borrow all your friends' car's, but that would be a royal pain.

A sensible solution would be to rent a moving truck or van. That way you would only have to make one trip. Nothing is worse than driving back and forth between your new place and your old place. When you hire a rental truck, you can pile everything in once, and then unload it once.

So the question becomes, what kind of rental truck should you get? Of course, you could go down to your local truck rental place and get the cheapest one, but that might not be too convenient. It would be better to get one that's big enough to carry all of your stuff, and then some.

Another thing to consider is to get a truck that has an automatic lift on the back. That way you only have to roll your stuff out there on the dolly, place it on the back, and then automatically lift it up so it's level with the entrance to the truck. This way, it will be much safer, and you won't have to worry about hurting yourself.

If you are moving more than a few miles, then consider getting a one way rental truck. This might be a little bit more expensive, but it will save you a lot of time. That way you can pick up your truck close to home, load it up, and drop if off once everything is unpacked.

Also, make sure when you rent your truck to get in and check it out. Make sure you are comfortable driving it, and that you can see everything properly. This can be difficult if you aren't used to driving a big vehicle, but you can get used to it pretty easily. Now you're ready to get going.

The Real Reason the Kindle Fire Costs $199 (ContributorNetwork)

A lot has been made of the rock-bottom price tag attached to Amazon.com's new multitouch tablet. The going theory right now is that Amazon hopes to make it up in volume; not volume of tablets sold (Amazon may well be taking a loss), but the volume of ebooks and other digital content sold. Amazon's closest competitor, Barnes and Noble, seems to have taken just such an approach with its Nook Color, which was already considered a bargain at $249.

Looking more closely at Amazon's announcement and product page, though, we can get a glimpse of its real agenda:

All it wants to do is eat your brains

No, not literally. But take a closer look at Amazon Silk, the "Revolutionary Cloud-Accelerated 'Split Browser'". That "Split Browser" thing means that your web browsing on a Kindle Fire is split between it and Amazon's EC2 cloud. Amazon's computers handle and "optimize" every web page you see before they're sent to your Kindle Fire, unless you turn that feature off.

The terms and conditions say that Amazon only temporarily logs the addresses of websites you visit. But according to the Amazon Silk FAQ, "Amazon Silk has the ability to learn about traffic patterns on individual sites over time." It's not quite eating your brains, but it does involve knowing what websites Kindle Fire owners go to!

The Mechanical Turk

That was the name of what was ostensibly an 18th-century chess-playing machine, and was actually controlled by a person inside it. It's also the name of Amazon's "marketplace for work" that pays people pennies for doing extremely repetitive tasks.

As Chris Espinosa notes, what Amazon Silk basically amounts to is a Mechanical Turk for indexing the web. Why would anyone want to do this? For "the knowledge of what other stores [its] customers are shopping in and what prices they're being offered there." Plus, by doing so it deprives Google of data; as far as Google sees, it's Amazon's servers clicking on all those links, not thousands of Kindle owners.

Still worth the price?

Even if everyone knew all of this, the Kindle Fire would probably still sell thousands of units. Or would it? We may never know, since Amazon's not exactly being proactive about telling people.

Is this really the reason Amazon's charging so little, though? Where would Amazon have gotten the idea to try this?

Well, if you look at one of the latest black and white Kindles, it now costs $40 more than the Kindle with "special offers;" that is, advertisements. That's more than the price difference used to be. Maybe Amazon's starting to learn just how much value it can extract from people ... after all, it has plenty of experience.

Use Old Trade Directories To Build Your Family History

Use Old Trade Directories To Build Your Family History

In my research, into my family tree, I have often turned to Old Trade Directories as a resource. For example, in Plymouth, Devon, I have located one of my more enterprising ancestors in the 1861 census as being a Victualler and Brass founder and giving employment to one woman, six men and a number of boys. With this discovered I then went to the Historical Directories website, a project run by the University of Leicester.

The Best Text Expansion App for Windows [Windows App Directory]

The Best Text Expansion App for WindowsWindows has a number of text expansion apps, but none of them are perfect. PhraseExpress is the best option we've found, though, due to its high configurability and low price.

The Best Text Expansion App for Windows

  • Type a short snippet that can expand to text of virtually any length
  • System-wide spelling correction in more than seven languages
  • Smart learning feature that monitors oft-typed phrases and predicts them as you type
  • Built-in clipboard manager for quick access to your most recent clipboard contents
  • Launch programs or open folders with text snippets
  • Import snippets from TextExpander for Mac and AutoCorrect entires from Microsoft Office

The Best Text Expansion App for Windows

PhraseExpress is pretty powerful, and does a lot more than just simple text expansion. Apart from just expanding the snippets you manually create, it can watch everything you type, learn your own individual style, and start autocorrecting phrases for you as you type. It also has a huge dictionary of oft-misspelled words so you get autocorrect in any app on your system. Some may see this as a plus, though it can also contribute to some issues. It also has a ton of advanced settings that let you really dig down and tweak how you use text expansion, which is great for power users.

The Best Text Expansion App for Windows

PhraseExpress is kind of a pain to use. Sure, it's highly configurable, but there are some simple things that it just doesn't do right. For example, if you have a rather long snippet, you'll need to use the "clipboard" method of text expansion if you want it to move faster than a snail. However using the clipboard method means you can't paste clipboard contents within snippets (even though Breevy seems to handle this just fine). You can get around this by setting different expansion methods for longer snippets, but it's workarounds like this that just make it annoying to use. Still, it's free, and if the alternative is a $40 program, most of you are probably willing to do a bit of tinkering for these special situations.

Furthermore, the extra built-in features can sometimes get in the way more than they actually help. If you don't want system-wide autocorrect, or you don't want it to track everything you type, it'll probably annoy you more than anything. However, it's all very easy to turn off, so if you don't like it, with a few checkboxes you can turn it into a simple text expansion program.

The Best Text Expansion App for Windows

If PhraseExpress is a bit too complicated for you, Texter is much simpler. Written by our own Adam Pash, you just type in your snippets, give them a trigger key if desired, and you're off to the races. Some people have noticed a few quirks (like when gaming or with autocorrect acting a bit glitchy), but others have found it to be rock solid. Either way, it's a simple, free alternative if PhraseExpress isn't doing it for you.

If you're willing to pay, the $40 Breevy is probably the most stable, easy-to-use option without sacrificing features. It would probably win our pick for best if it weren't so expensive, so if you've got money to blow it's a good option?but with a few tweaks, PhraseExpress will work just as well.

These aren't the only apps on Windows, but they represent the best that Windows has to offer. If you have a favorite we didn't mention, let us know what it is and why you love it in the comments.

Dorian de Wind: The GOP Presidential Debates: When Will the Candidates Show Some Spine?

I have strongly disagreed with Senator John McCain's politics and policies -- especially his almost fanatic opposition to ending "Don't ask, Don't tell" and his stubborn support of the Iraq war. I have also been disappointed with the senator's seriously flawed judgment on several issues and decisions, such as his deplorable posturing on the new GI Bill of Rights during the Bush administration and his abominable pick of Sarah Palin to be his running mate.

But, at the same time, I respect the senator's principled stand on torture, salute his long and honorable service for his country and I will always admire his sacrifice and heroism as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War.

I also had respect for John McCain when, during the presidential campaign, he repeatedly urged his base to tone down their increasingly vitriolic and racially-tinged personal attacks on candidate Obama. The crowd's response? Rounds of boos for McCain and louder, and angrier, and nastier catcalls against Obama.

I have not forgotten McCain's response to a woman who said, "I can't trust Obama. I have read about him and he's not, he's not uh -- he's an Arab. He's not -- ." Taking the microphone from the woman, McCain replied: "No, ma'am. He's a decent family man [and] citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues and that's what this campaign's all about. He's not [an Arab]."

McCain has indeed been a lonely maverick among Republicans, Conservatives and members of the Tea Party when it comes to civil and respectful discourse.

Witness, at the Sept. 12 GOP presidential debate at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, Calif., the applause and loud cheers by the crowd when Rick Perry was asked about the death penalty and the more than 200 executions that have occurred in his state on his watch.

Witness the cheering and shouts of "yes" from some at the CNN/Tea Party Express sponsored GOP presidential debate in Tampa, Fla. when moderator Wolf Blitzer asked Ron Paul if a catastrophically sick man who chose not to get health insurance should be allowed to die in the hospital rather than have the state pay his medical bills.

Witness the loud booing by some in the audience at the most recent Fox-sponsored GOP debate when a gay American soldier serving in Iraq, Stephen Hill, asked the following question via video clip:

In 2010, when I was deployed to Iraq, I had to lie about who I was, because I'm a gay soldier, and I didn't want to lose my job. My question is, under one of your presidencies, do you intend to circumvent the progress that's been made for gay and lesbian soldiers in the military?

Referring to both the disgusting booing and the odious answer given by Rick Santorum to the gay soldier's question, Andrew Sullivan has this to say:

But somehow the fact that these indignities were heaped on a man risking his life to serve this country, a man ballsy enough to make that video, a man in the uniform of the United States ... well, it tells me a couple of things. It tells me that these Republicans don't actually deep down care for the troops, if that means gay troops. Their constant posturing military patriotism has its limits.

Many will point out that these despicable outbursts are by a few and do not represent the feelings or the views of the majority of GOP voters.

I would like to believe that.

But how come none of these people vying for the highest office in the land have had the spine, the character that McCain displayed, to speak up and tell these "few" that they will not tolerate such displays of disdain and total lack of compassion towards fellow Americans.

How come none of these people aspiring to become the commander-in-chief has had the guts to tell the "few" that they will not tolerate such disrespect towards our soldiers serving in harm's way -- straight or gay?

The silence by this field of presidential candidates has been deafening and shameful.

Three Republican debates in as many weeks and three jarring exhibits of insensitivity and prejudice on the part of some in the audience, but even more disturbing, three examples of lack of leadership and spine on the part of all the GOP presidential wannabes.

If there are similar outbursts from the audience at future debates, I bet that at least one of the candidates will follow the principled example of John McCain.

But will it be too little, too late -- too disingenuous -- to erase a very troubling and lasting impression?

CODA: Some of the G.O.P candidates have finally started to comment on the gay soldier incident.
Asked about it by ABC:

One insists that he "didn't hear" the boos.

Another said that it was "totally unfortunate and unnecessary..."

Others sidestepped the issue, "declined to go into details," or declined to comment at all.

I believe that a future president should have pretty good hearing, but, more important, should have the mettle to react on-the-spot, right then-and-there, to any situation or scenario -- not a couple of hours or days later...

Sports in India ? the Sole Determiner of the Outcome

Sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities to the competitor are the sole determiner of the outcome. In early India, sports in India were very much concerned about the development of the physique and for the art of offense and defence. Along with recreation, sports played a vital role in the development of a man?s personality. Important amongst a variety of them included indoor games, Music, Dinging and Dancing, Wrestling, outdoor sports like Fishing and Boating, Chariot race, Archery, etc.

Americans Still Banking on Home Equity for Retirement | Reverse ...

September 28th, 2011 ?|? by Alyssa Gerace Published in News, Retirement, Reverse Mortgage

Despite more than half of surveyed Americans reporting a loss of value in their homes of at least 10% during the housing market decline, 68% say their home?s value is still very or somewhat important to their retirement plan,?a new?COUNTRY Financial homeownership survey reveals.

That number shoots up to 83% of those between the ages of 18 and 29, although nearly 60% of?homeowners now question whether buying a house is the best investment a family can make, says COUNTRY.

NewImage

Source: COUNTRY Financial, 2011

This may be because most homeowners would experience a ?mortgage gap? in their ability to pay a mortgage if they lost their job for a prolonged period of time.

The unemployment rate has hovered between 9 and 10% for much of the past couple years, a scary number for the 68% of homeowners who say they wouldn?t be able to keep up with mortgage payments after nine months if they lost their job,

It?s especially bad new as the current average unemployment length is nearly 10 months, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics.

For some, the ?gap? is even narrower. Nearly one third of survey respondents, at 31%, say they could maintain mortgage payments for just three to six months if they lost their jobs. More than one in four, at 27%, would only be able to pay for three months.

?The housing market decline and high unemployment has put a strain on everyone. Although there?s no quick fix, having a financial safety net can help. If possible, start an emergency fund to offset those unexpected life changes like unemployment,? said Keith Brannan, vice president of financial security planning, in a statement. ?If you?re concerned about your mortgage, seeking professional advice to reprioritize your income can help you protect your current possessions and budget for future expenses.?

Roche bone drug eases pain in prostate cancer trial (Reuters)

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) ? Roche's bone strengthening drug Boniva is as good for pain relief as single dose radiotherapy in patients whose prostate cancer has spread to their bones, according to data from a late-stage trial released on Sunday.

Trial investigators said the level side effects of Boniva -- known generically as ibandronate (IB) -- were also comparable with radiotherapy, suggesting it could offer an alternative option for advanced cancer patients suffering pain.

Bone metastases, or secondary tumors in the bone, are common in many advanced cancers and "are a serious problem for men with prostate cancer," said Peter Hoskin a professor clinical oncology at University College, London, who presented the data at the European Multidisciplinary Cancer Congress (EMCC) in Stockholm on Sunday.

"We found that using IB was as good as single dose radiotherapy in controlling pain," he said.

Boniva is one of a class of osteoporosis drugs known as bisphosphonates, which work by sticking to calcium and binding to it. Others in the same class include Novartis's Zometa and Merck's Fosamax.

They prevent bone loss by inhibiting the activity of cells that break down bone, called osteoclasts.

For the late stage, or Phase III, trial, researchers gave 470 patients with painful secondary tumors in the bone either a single dose of radiation or an intravenous infusion of Boniva.

Patients reported their main site of pain when they began the trial, and then again at four, eight, 12, 26 and 52 weeks after treatment.

Those who had not responded to the first treatment at four weeks crossed over to the alternative therapy and received their second treatment no later than week eight.

Pain levels were measured at four and 12 weeks by analysing how many painkillers patients were needing to take, and by scoring their reported pain levels using two standard methods called the WHO pain ladder and the Mercadante method.

"Although there were more patients in the IB group with worse Mercadante scores at four weeks who needed re-treatment, at six and 12 months, there was no long-term difference in pain relief between the two groups," Hoskin said

The median survival of the four groups was 11.8 months for those on radiotherapy only, 11.4 months for those on the Roche drug only, 12.7 months for those on radiotherapy then Boniva, and 16.8 months for those on Boniva and then radiotherapy.

But Hoskin said it was too early to draw any conclusions from these data about the drug's relative impact on survival in this group of patients.

"We hope to analyze these survival differences further in the hope that it can give us... pointers as to how and whether we should use a combination of treatments," he said. "Currently we are unsure about the optimal timing and scheduling of treatment for these patients."

For now Hoskin said Boniva, which is also sold under the brand name Bonviva, would be addition to the arsenal of other possible treatments for cancer pain and could potentially be useful in other types of the diseases such as breast cancer, where secondary bone tumors are also common.

Downturn giving microcredit second chance in U.S.: Yunus (Reuters)

CHICAGO (Reuters) ? The economic slump that has thrown millions of Americans out of work also jump-started the moribund U.S. microcredit sector, a Nobel laureate who pioneered nonprofit lending to the poor said.

The idea of using small, uncollateralized loans to help the poor had failed to catch on in the United States despite the efforts of backers like former President Bill Clinton, who helped get a microfinance venture up and running briefly in Arkansas when he was governor in the 1980s

But Muhammad Yunus, the founder of microlender Grameen Bank, said the brutal recession and lackluster recovery has made poverty alleviation a growth industry in the world's largest economy.

Yunus said Grameen America -- a separate, nonprofit he started in the United States -- has established a firm foothold over the past three years, with branches now open in New York, Nebraska and Indiana.

Grameen America plans to expand next into San Francisco and, possibly, Detroit, where -- as in so many cities -- the disappointing economic recovery that followed the deep recession has pushed more Americans into poverty.

"People said, 'Look, it will not work in this country,'" the 70-year-old told Reuters of the Grameen approach to finance, which is founded on the belief that even the poorest of the poor are credit-worthy.

"I said, 'No. It will work in any country because the issues are the same whether it's the United States or Bangladesh or Mexico. It doesn't matter."

Poverty has never been a problem confined to the developing world, but it has become a growing embarrassment in the United States. Just last week, the U.S. Census Bureau reported 46.2 million Americans are living under the poverty line, the highest number in the 52 years the bureau has tracked it.

BETTER THAN BANGLADESH?

Yunus said loan performance in New York City, where Grameen America now has four branches and 6,000 borrowers, has been as good if not better than he had seen back home in Bangladesh.

"The average loan," Yunus said, "is $1,500 and the repayment rate is near 100 percent -- 99 plus percent."

The model Grameen America uses in the United States is quite different from the one Grameen Bank uses back at home, largely because U.S. banking regulations are stricter.

Unable to get a U.S. banking license because of high initial asset requirements, Grameen America has adopted a donor-supported model, opening branches in cities where local benefactors provide funding -- typically at least $6 million -- to get the poverty-alleviating lending program up and running.

Getting donors to pony up given the uncertainty haunting the global economy is tough. Adding to the challenge is the controversy that has come to surround Yunus, the winner of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize, and microlending in general.

After criticizing the Bangladeshi government for corruption, Yunus was thrown out of his job earlier this year as managing director of Grameen Bank, an institution he founded 30 years ago and with which he shared the peace prize.

But he remains chairman of the board of Grameen America, a separate entity that seeks to do for urban areas of the United States what Grameen Bank has done in Bangladesh.

Associates of Yunus said his removal from the Bangladesh parent company was government retaliation after he briefly considered a challenge to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The action against Yunus coincided with growing criticism of microlending in developing countries, where a controversial for-profit version of the idea has enraged borrowers by pursuing aggressive marketing and collection campaigns.

Yunus has also had to defend himself from claims made in a Norwegian documentary that Grameen Bank was dodging taxes.

Yunus has denied any financial irregularities and the Norwegian government found no evidence of wrongdoing.

Asked about the controversy in Chicago this week, where he was honored for his anti-poverty efforts by DePaul University, Yunus said his fight to clear his name -- and regain his position at Grameen Bank in Bangladesh -- was not over.

"It's still on," he said.

Go to a Bowling Tournament | Business and Sport

Bowling must be the most laid back sports of all! You could try your hand at it without any practice or drill and any game you play could be like a bowling tournament. Whether you play with just one more person or your entire gang of friends, you need to compete in each round to get a good cumulative score. Since there aren?t many bowling accessories to learn, just a few games with your local bowling league or your gang of friends could get you going!?

However, this does not imply that there are no bowling skills required at all. It is difficult for many people to bowl strikes. A course from an expert at the game or a few tips will help you get the much needed skills required for a fruitful game. Though if you play for long enough, you will ultimately learn how to hook the ball and bowl consistently. This also allows you to work on any weaknesses in your game. You could master it in a few dozen tournaments or a few hundred, but anybody who plays it for long gets pretty good at bowling!?

Not everybody plays a bowling tournament for the glory of it. Though a good game surely helps, it is not like a bad game should ruin your day! Going down to the Bowling Palace is a fun way to catch up with friends and binds you together as a group. Catch up with all the gossip, get a few drinks and the bowling tournament helps you unwind and take away the stress like no other activity. Bowling can be fun and competitive at the same time. You could end up being very angry as well, though not often. Mostly, bowling tournaments are a fun filled activity for the entire group which leaves everybody happy and content and far away from the everyday stress of life!?

If you have only been to a couple of bowling tournaments, you may not have the taste for the game yet. Initially, it can be quite a frustrating experience when you may take more than a week of playing every day before you can consistently roll the ball down the alley without it being a gutter ball. Once you begin actually playing the game and not always aiming to hit something, the game will become much more enjoyable. A bowling tournament is laid back and intense at the same time ? making it the perfect way to unwind after a hard day?s work.?

?Today,ELJRF220JF price, the acquisition of Alcatel?s mobile phone business when the decision is still correct, if not the original M & A activity, it is difficult to imagine today how the TCL phone business will be the outcome.?

In early August, TCL CEO Li Dongsheng, chairman of the ?First Financial Daily? said that in recent years, domestic and global mobile phone market situation becomes acute, the first to enter the domestic mobile phone industry, 12 companies, TCL is now only one, the only remaining. In contrast, TCL Alcatel Mobile Communication as mergers and acquisitions business, and today has grown into the world?s seventh largest mobile phone supplier.

ZTE Skate launches worldwide, attempts to stick landing in the US

The ZTE Skate -- spiritual sucessor to the Blade and current flagship -- is pushing on with its global roll-out and it looks like it may reach the US. Now on sale in Hong Kong, Brazil and Spain, the Skate is rolling down the French Alps and into France and the UK, where the Orange-branded Monte Carlo (a Skate in phone network clothing) is already available. With a different ZTE device set to arrive on Cricket soon, the electronics giant also intends to bring this 4.3-inch phone to the US in the near future, though there's nothing concrete on dates and prices just yet. According to ZTE's executive VP He Shiyou, the company is set to launch "a total of 30 smartphone models" by the end of the year. We fear the company may run out of flat-shaped names before the end of November. Head on over to our Chinese site for some hands-on shots.

Coming Soon: Girls Wrestling Borough Teams : NYC Womens ...

Beat the Streets is working on a new approach to NYC Girls Wrestling this season. The plan is for?each borough to?host a Girls Team? that will be open to all high school and middle school aged girls. While the?drop-in center?is not a new one at Beat the Streets, what makes these unique is that the coach and practice will be dedicated solely to the female athletes.

Oftentimes, coaches who support Girls Wrestling are stretched thin between managing their rosters and trying to keep up with Girls Wrestling events. Some girls shy away from coed sports. Even more parents are hesitant to let their daughters participate in coed sports. While Beat the Streets already hosts a program dedicated solely to Girls Events, bringing events and Girls Practices to all the boroughs was a?challenge given limited resources in the past. It is hoped that with a Girls?Team in each of the boroughs, more girls will try the sport out.

Recruiting is currently taking place for the Coaches/Managers of each of the Girls Borough Teams and?practice sites. Practice times and locations will be announced in forthcoming newsletters as well as on?this website??and on?www.beat-the-streets.org.

Facebook adds new social Internet radio service

Facebook members will have the chance to listen and chat about music in real-time with their friends via virtual listening rooms through a new social Internet radio service.

Facebook will be offering a new app from Myxer Social Radio to bring friends together through music as they listen at the same time in rooms they create or that are created by their friends, with music choices enhanced by Myxer?s recommendations.

After downloading the free app on Facebook once it hits the site later this year, users can log in and see which friends are also using the service. Similar to Pandora?s streaming service, people can join different listening rooms or channels based on musical artists, such as Lady Gaga or U2.

However, Myxer ? which has an existing mobile music service that includes 49 million users ? takes it a social step further by allowing anyone in the room the opportunity to chat about the song and even record a "Song Story," a 30-second video where someone can explain what the song means to them.

"We see this as an opportunity to bring people together through music and enhance the experience of music through social content," Myxer?s CEO Myk Willis told TechNewsDaily. "No matter where your friends may be, the app can bring people and music together. By adding social context to music with features such as Song Stories, it?s like hearing songs for the first time through someone else's ears."

People can also vote on whether or not they like the song that?s playing in the listening room. If the majority rules and people want to hear a new song, Myxer will play another one.

"This is more about strengthening social connections with real friends than a tool that will be used to meet new people," Willis said. ?Digital natives enjoy interacting with their friends and this gives them another way to connect as they listen to music.?

Americans freed from prison leave Iran (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Two Americans jailed in Iran as spies left Tehran on Wednesday, closing a high-profile drama with archfoe Washington that brought more than two years of hope then heartbreak for the families as the Islamic Republic's hard-line rulers rejected international calls for their release.

Iran's state news agency IRNA said Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal left Iran just as darkness fell in the capital. An Omani official told The Associated Press the men were flying to the capital, Muscat. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. He did not say how long the two men will stay in the Gulf state before heading home to America.

The case of Bauer and Fattal, who were convicted by an Iranian court of spying for the United States, has deepened strains in the already fraught relationship between Washington and Tehran. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who was first to mention last week that the Americans' could be released, is in the United States and is scheduled to speak at the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday.

The release came just minutes before President Barack Obama addressed the U.N. General Assembly. There was no direct evidence that Iran timed the American's freedom to overshadow Obama's speech, but Iran has conducted international political stagecraft in the past.

Most famously, Iran waited until just moments after Ronald Reagan's presidential inauguration in January 1981 to free 52 American hostages held for 444 days at the former U.S. Embassy after it was stormed by militants backing Iran's Islamic Revolution. The timing was seen as a way to embarrass ex-President Jimmy Carter for his backing of Iran's former monarch.

Associated Press reporters saw a convoy of vehicles with Swiss and Omani diplomats leaving Evin prison on Wednesday afternoon with Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal inside, heading to Tehran's Mehrabad airport.

Switzerland represents American interests in Iran because the U.S. has no diplomatic relations with Tehran and the prisoners are expected to be flown to Oman now.

The two men, both 29, were driven out of the prison compound just minutes after their Iranian attorney, Masoud Shafiei, said he has completed the paperwork for their release.

"I have finished the job that I had to do as their lawyer," Shafiei said. He obtained signatures of two judges on a bail-for-freedom deal. A $1 million bail ? $500,000 for each one ? was posted.

Police vehicles escorted the convoy of Swiss and Omani vehicles, carrying the two Americans to Mehrabad airport, which was once Tehran's main gateway to the world but is now used for domestic flights. The airport is near the massive Azadi Square, which Iran uses to hold military parades but also was a temporary hub for protesters after Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election in 2009.

The release of the two Americans removes one point of tension between Iran and the United States, but suspicions still exist on both sides and no thaw is in sight.

Washington and European allies worry Iran is using its civilian nuclear program as cover to develop atomic weapons and have urged for even stronger sanctions to pressure Tehran. Iran denies any efforts to make nuclear weapons. Iran, in turn, is deeply concerned about the U.S. military on its borders in Iraq and Afghanistan, and sharply denounces U.S. influence in the Middle East.

Bauer and Fattal were arrested along the Iran-Iraq border in July 2009 and sentenced last month to eight years each in prison. A third American arrested with them, Sarah Shourd, was freed last year on bail.

The London-based rights group Amnesty International called the release of the Americans a "long overdue step."

"Iranian authorities have finally seen sense" and have agreed to release Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Amnesty International Deputy Director for Middle East and North Africa. "They must now be allowed to leave Iran promptly to be reunited with their families."

The three Americans ? friends from their days at the University of California at Berkeley ? have maintained their innocence and denied the espionage charges against them.

Their families and the U.S. government said they were just hiking in northern Iraq's scenic and relatively peaceful Kurdish region when they may have accidentally strayed over the unmarked border with Iran.

The last direct contact family members had with Bauer and Fattal was in May 2010 when their mothers were permitted a short visit in Tehran.

It was not clear where the two men will be reunited with their families after their release.

Phone messages left for Fattal's mother and brother in Philadelphia were not immediately returned Wednesday.

Since her release last year, Shourd has lived in Oakland, Calif. Bauer, a freelance journalist, grew up in Onamia, Minn., and Fattal, an environmental activist, is from suburban Philadelphia.

Bauer proposed marriage to Shourd while in prison.

After her release last September, Shourd was flown on a private plane to the Omani capital, Muscat.

Last week, Oman again dispatched a plane belonging to the Gulf country's ruler to the Iranian capital to fetch the two men if the freedom-for-bail was reached.

Oman has close ties with both Tehran and Washington and plays a strategic role in the region by sharing control with Iran of the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, which is the route for 40 percent of the world's oil tanker traffic.

Their case of the three Americans closely parallels that of freelance journalist Roxana Saberi, an Iranian-American who convicted of spying before being released in May 2009. Saberi was sentenced to eight years in prison, but an appeals court reduced that to a two-year suspended sentence and let her return to the U.S.

In May 2009, a French academic, Clotilde Reiss, also was freed after her 10-year sentence on espionage-related charges was commuted.

Last year, Iran freed an Iranian-American businessman, Reza Taghavi, who was held for 29 months for alleged links to a bombing in the southern city of Shiraz, which killed 14 people. Taghavi denied any role in the attack.
