Cinemark will reopen Century Aurora 16, letter to mayor says

The neon lights at Century Aurora 16 were dimmed Friday night, but they won't be off for long.

Cinemark, based in Plano, Texas, said Friday that the theater complex, where 12 people were killed and 58 others were injured, will be renovated and reopened, perhaps by the end of the year.

Cinemark president Tim Warner said in a letter to Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan that "it will be our privilege to reopen the theater. We pledge to reconfigure the space and make the theater better than ever."

Warner's letter was in response to correspondence sent last week by Hogan that said the city had gathered input from the community about what should be done with the site of the July 20 shooting, which took place during a sold-out

showing of "The Dark Knight Rises."

"We believe that we are hearing, and indeed have heard for some time, a collective wish and desire for the theater to reopen," Hogan wrote.

Aurora conducted an online survey in late August asking for community input on the future of the theater, and officials had said they would submit the comments to Cinemark.

The company declined further comment Friday about the reconstruction and did not offer a specific date for when it would reopen.

Warner said in his letter that the company hopes "the theater will be ready by the beginning of the New Year."

In the two months since its doors closed, neon lights adorning the outside of the complex have remained on ? to the chagrin of some of the victims and their families ? but have now been shut off until the theater reopens.

Business considerations probably played a big role in deciding whether the 16-screen theater should reopen.

During the weekend after the shooting, box-office revenues declined 65 to 90 percent at all theaters in Aurora. But in the following weekend ? even as Century Aurora 16 remained closed ? box-office revenues rebounded by about 90 percent in Aurora's six remaining movie theaters.

Karie Bible, a box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations in Los Angeles, said the exact timing of when Century Aurora 16 reopens could influence ticket sales.

Bible said box-office revenues typically increase beginning in October, as Oscar-caliber films begin to premiere. The increases usually continue through the end of the year.

Throughout this whole ordeal, officials with Cinemark and the city of Aurora have stressed condolences and well wishes to the families of victims killed and those who continue to recover.

Greg Medek, whose 23-year-old daughter, Micayla, was killed in the theater shooting, said he initially thought the building should be razed.

"But now, if they want to keep it open, a portion of the profits each quarter should go toward the victims affected by this shooting," he said. "There's going to be ongoing psychological and physical costs that will last a lifetime. I think it's fair."

On Thursday, volunteers and Aurora city staffers removed a makeshift memorial that had been constructed across from the theater in the days after the shooting.

In a statement Friday, Hogan said the theater has been a valued part of the community for many years.

"I am confident Cinemark will continue to remain sensitive to victims, their families, their employees and our community throughout their process of remodeling and reopening," he said.

Staff writer Jordan Steffen contributed to this report.

Obama to Latinos: Romney ?uncertain? about immigration reform plans

(Carolyn Kaster/AP)President Barack Obama, under tough questioning at a Univision-hosted forum in Miami on Thursday, defended his failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform during his first term in office.

"My first priority was making sure that we prevented us from going into a Great Depression," Obama said?after Univision host Jorge Ramos bluntly told the president he had failed to keep his promise to pass immigration reform.

"I did not make a promise that I would get everything done, 100 percent," Obama said, adding that the issue remains a "top priority" for his administration.

The president also took a shot at GOP rival Mitt Romney's suggestion that Obama supporters?which Romney estimated to be 47 percent of the country?have a "victim" mentality and are reliant on government handouts.

"When you express an attitude that half the country considers itself victims, that somehow they want to be dependent on government, my thinking is, maybe you haven't gotten around a lot," Obama said, describing Americans as some of "the hardest-working people there are." "People want a hand up, not a handout."

Obama's comments came a day after Romney participated in the first of the Spanish-language network's two forums. The Republican presidential nominee had also come under tough questioning about his immigration policies.

Obama additionally cast blame on congressional Republicans, saying he was "na?ve" to think the opposing party would work with him on the issue. He told Univision he was not "all powerful" and simply didn't have the votes to pass the bill without the support of GOP lawmakers.

"One of my first acts was to invite every single member of Congress who had previously been supportive comprehensive immigration reform to the White House and say to them, 'We need to get this done,'" Obama said. "What I confess I did not expect... is that Republicans who had previously supported comprehensive immigration reform ? suddenly would walk away."

Obama also insisted that his executive action earlier this year that allows young immigrants brought into the country illegally by their parents to obtain work visas without fear of deportation was not politically motivated, as Romney has suggested.

"I was winning the Latino vote before we took that action," Obama said, acknowledging polls that show him leading Romney among Hispanic voters by more than 40 points. And Romney, he said, who has criticized Obama for failing to deliver on immigration reform, is?"uncertain about what his plan for immigration reform would be."

Obama added that "the issue here for voters is whose vision best represents the aspirations not just of the Latino community, but of all Americans who believe that we are a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants. And that candidate I believe is talking to you right now."

Europe approves Universal - EMI merger, cements the dominance of the 'big three'

Europe approves Universal EMI merger,

The European Union has signed off on Universal's $1.9 billion purchase of EMI music, provided that it sells off two-thirds of the fallen giant's assets to comply with competition regulations. The most notable jewel on the auction block is label Parlophone, home of the early Beatles records, Pink Floyd, Radiohead and Kylie. Chiefs added the conditions in the hope of preventing the new mega-corporation from gaining too much market share, but given that Sony (which bought EMI's publishing arm) and Warner Music are its only real competitors -- it's sealed the trio as the only guests at the top table of the music industry, problematic for anyone looking to found an iTunes or Spotify rival and doesn't fancy playing by their rules.

Sunni, Shi'ite Islamists clash in Yemen, one killed

SANAA (Reuters) - Clashes between Shi'ite and Sunni Islamist groups in Yemen killed one person on Friday, the latest violence between groups vying for influence in the Arabian Peninsula country after the ouster of veteran president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Al Qaeda and other Islamist groups gained strength in Yemen during the chaos of the uprising and have engaged in intermittent clashes over the past year.

The Sahwa website run by the Sunni Islah party said a preacher died in an attack by followers of the Zaydi Shi'ite group known as the Houthis on a mosque in a district of Amran province north of Sanaa.

A Defense Ministry statement said one person died in clashes between armed men.

Islah, which has taken the lion's share of posts given to opposition parties in the post-Saleh government, includes many puritanical Islamists known as Salafis with close links to Saudi Arabia.

The Houthis have complained of marginalization in the transition. They have a strong presence in northern provinces, where they have fought several wars with central government forces since 2004 and fought Saudi forces in 2009.

Saleh's government accused Shi'ite power Iran of backing the Houthis with money and weapons.

The Houthis, who call themselves Ansarallah (Partisans of God), said two of their men died in attack by armed men from Islah in Hajjah province east of Amran. That report was not immediately verified by government sources.

The Houthis, who observers say model themselves on Lebanon's Hezbollah, have tried to assert their strength in Sanaa, where they have many followers among Zaydi Shi'ites.

In recent weeks they have put up anti-U.S. banners in Sanaa and drawn anti-U.S. graffiti, casting themselves as the leading force against U.S. policy in Yemen.

Christian activist: I was deceived over film

TODAY's Matt Lauer speaks with Al-Arabiya's Washington bureau chief Hisham Melhem on what has made conditions in the Middle East so ripe for violence, and whether there's a deeper anger that feeds the current outrage against the United States.

By Reuters

WASHINGTON -- An American Coptic Christian activist whose California TV facility was used to make an anti-Islam film that touched off protests across the Muslim world said he was deceived by the film's producer about its inflammatory content.?

In a statement posted on the blog of a prominent American anti-Islamic activist, Joseph Nassralla, founder of a Duarte, California-based group called Media for Christ, said he was a victim of "disinformation and smear" and the film's principal producer had altered its content without his knowledge.?

Akhtar Soomro / Reuters

Protests ignited by a controversial film that ridicules Islam's Prophet Muhammad spread throughout Muslim world.

Media for Christ operates a Christian satellite TV station called The Way TV, according to its website and tax return.?

Nassralla said he was contacted last year by Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, whom he described as the film's producer, with a plan to make a film about the persecution of Christians in Egypt.?

Nakoula, who has a criminal record for bank fraud and drug offenses, was briefly questioned last weekend by federal authorities about possible probation violations. He was later released and has gone into hiding.?

Nassralla said in his statement that in explaining his film project, Nakoula had said the film would be called "Desert Warrior" and would "examine the culture of the desert and how it is related to what is going on right now."?

The statement was posted on the website Atlasshrugs2000, which is run by Pamela Geller, an activist who has organized anti-Islamic protests and events, including demonstrations opposing construction of an Islamic center near the site of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York in 2001.?

Egypt issues arrest warrants for Terry Jones, Coptic Christians over anti-Islam video

There was no way to independently confirm Nassralla's account.?

An attorney representing Nakoula in the investigation by probation officials declined to comment on Nassralla's statement, saying he was aware of the blog post but had not had a chance to discuss it with his client. He said Nakoula or his representatives may issue a statement in the future.?

Actors: 'We were grossly misled'

Nassralla, who spoke at two rallies in 2010 and 2011 organized by Geller, said Nakoula "needed a place to film. So I let him use my facility."?

"That is all I did, and is the full extent of my involvement with this project. Nakoula used my facility for ten days. Media for Christ employees were given a vacation during that time, because Nakoula was using the facility and so there was no work for them. There was only one Media for Christ employee who remained, to answer phones for the ministry," Nassralla said.?

NBC Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel spoke with former Arab League chief and former Egyptian foreign minister, Amr Moussa, to ask why there has been so much anti-American violence despite America's support of Arab Spring.

Hezbollah chief makes rare appearance, leads calls for protests over video

There was no sign of activity at the small studios of Media for Christ, located in a nondescript office park behind a Walmart store in suburban Duarte, during two visits last week by a Reuters reporter.?

On both occasions the doors were found locked and knocks went unanswered. A woman who worked at an office next door said she had not seen any employees there in recent days.?

Nassralla said he later discovered that Nakoula, using the name "Sam Bacile," had used Media for Christ's name without his permission to obtain an official permit for making the film.

'We were shocked'
After accounts of the film began circulating in Egypt and other Muslim majority countries, the amateurish production -- which portrays the Prophet Muhammad as a womanizer and a fool -- set off a chain of violent protests and attacks on U.S. and other Western embassies in the Middle East and North Africa.?

In his statement, Nassralla said Nakoula had "filmed his movie not only at my ministry location, but in Nakoula's own home (which reporters located by getting the address from the actors), and in another facility for outside scenes that was included in the permit, Blue Canyon."?

US analysts: Benghazi emerges as key recruiting ground for al-Qaida

Nassralla also said that behind his back, Nakoula had "altered the film without anyone's knowledge, changing its entire focus and dubbing in new dialogue. He edited it."?

"The final product, 'Innocence of Muslims,' bore no resemblance to the film I thought he was making, or the film the actors thought they were creating. We were shocked," Nassralla said.?

In an introduction to Nassralla's statement, Geller said that she had last seen him at an event in June in California, and that now he was being "hunted like an animal for speaking critically about Islam."?

Nassralla "is currently in hiding after multiple death threats from Muslims because of his purported role in producing this video," she said.?

In an exchange of emails with Reuters last weekend, Geller suggested that if Nakoula was arrested, that would represent an attempt to impose strict Islamic Sharia law in the United States.?

"He will not be in prison for fraud or some probation violation, but for blasphemy. This is Shariah enforcement in America," she said.?

In a later email, however, Geller expressed disappointment over Nassralla's account of his dealings with Nakoula. But she added, "That would not make (Nakoula) any less a political prisoner."?

Fed committed to growth push despite internal discord

(Reuters) - A string of speeches from top Federal Reserve officials on Tuesday suggested the U.S. central bank is willing to be aggressive in its drive to beef up economic growth, yet also highlighted a small but vocal minority opposing fresh stimulus.

As Fed policymakers took to the podium following their announcement of an open-ended bond-buying program last week, William Dudley, the New York Federal Reserve Bank's influential president, said officials are committed to accelerating the pace of economic recovery.

The U.S. economy grew at just a 1.7 percent annual rate in the second quarter, not enough to put a dent in the nation's jobless rate, which stood at 8.1 percent last month.

"If you're trying to get a car moving that is stuck in the mud, you don't stop pushing the moment the wheels start turning - you keep pushing until the car is rolling and is clearly free," said Dudley, a former partner at Goldman Sachs.

Dudley, however, also emphasized that the policy was sufficiently flexible to accommodate any shift in the outlook.

"If the economy is weaker, we'll do more," he told a business group in Florham Park, New Jersey. "If the economy is stronger, and we see a substantial improvement in the outlook for the labor market sooner, we'll end up doing less."

Chicago Fed President Charles Evans, a forceful advocate for more monetary stimulus, said policymakers would likely decide at the end of the year to keep their asset purchases from dwindling when another program aimed at lowering long-term interest rates known as Operation Twist expires.

Following a two-day meeting, the Fed announced on Thursday that it would buy $40 billion in mortgage-backed securities per month and signaled a willingness to do more as needed until the outlook for employment improved significantly.

"I would be surprised if we would see enough evidence of that by the end of this year," Evans told reporters after a speech in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The new mortgage-related purchases come on top of about $45 billion per month in long-term Treasury purchases funded by sales of short-term securities the central bank holds under the Twist program.

"I would expect we would continue with something like an $85 billion base of purchases. That's a benchmark to start from," Evans said.

The central bank in late 2008 slashed interest rates to near zero and has since bought $2.3 trillion in securities in an unprecedented drive to spur growth and revive the economy after the worst recession in decades. Yet the recovery, especially in jobs, has been slow, leading the central bank to say it expects to keep rates at rock bottom at least through mid-2015.

A CONSENSUS WITH CAVEATS

While the vote for the new policy was 11-1, with only Richmond Fed President Jeffrey Lacker dissenting, it was clear that the internal consensus was not complete. Lacker explained his dissent further on Tuesday, arguing that he thought the new measures risked driving up inflation expectations in a way that would damage the central bank's credibility.

Richard Fisher, head of the Dallas Fed and an avowed inflation hawk who is not a voter on the central bank's policy panel this year, said he did not believe the new steps would be very effective and that he would have voted against the decision.

"I would argue that it is less impactful right now because you have other things inhibiting businesses from making decisions on (capital expenditures) and employment," he told CNBC. Fisher has frequently argued that uncertainty over regulatory and budget policy is the main factor restraining the U.S. recovery.

Speaking to Reuters, James Bullard of the St. Louis Fed, who moves into a voting slot next year, said he also opposed the new stimulus. But he offered a somewhat different reasoning, suggesting that while further bond buying could be effective, he did not believe the economic data had gotten bad enough to warrant more action.

"I would have voted against it based on the timing. I didn't feel like we had a good enough case to make a major move at this juncture," said Bullard. "I just would have wanted to wait to see a little bit more about how that's going to develop."

In a news conference last week explaining the central bank's action, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke emphasized that he had broad support within the central bank for the new measures. Indeed, the way the central bank is structured gives more power to the presidentially appointed, Washington-based board than to the regional Fed presidents, who vote on policy on a rotating basis.

There are seven members of the Fed board and 12 regional banks, but only five of the banks have a vote on monetary policy at any given time.

Wall Street economists have been trying to pinpoint exactly what would constitute a "substantial" improvement in the outlook for the labor market - a condition that the Fed last week suggested would halt the new monetary easing.

According to the median of forecasts in a Reuters poll on Friday, economists expect the Fed will buy a total of $600 billion of bonds under the latest round of purchases, and will look for a U.S. unemployment rate of 7 percent before it halts the program.

Romney says he supports '100 percent in America'

MIAMI (AP) ? Facing tough questions about his commitment to all Americans, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney declared Wednesday that his campaign supports "the 100 percent in America."

Romney was responding at a televised forum to questions sparked by his remarks last spring that, as a candidate, "my job is not to worry about" the 47 percent of Americans who don't earn enough to pay income taxes and are likely to support President Barack Obama. He also described them as people who are "dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe they are entitled" to a wide range of benefits.

In the days since the magazine Mother Jones posted the secretly taped comments to donors, the Romney campaign has tried to fend off criticism that the Republican candidate was writing off nearly half the country or was disdainful of them.

Earlier in the day, Romney tried to draw a distinction between himself and Obama. "The question of this campaign is not who cares about the poor and the middle class. I do. He does," Romney said at an Atlanta fundraiser. "The question is who can help the poor and the middle class. I can. He can't."

Romney has said he was talking on the video about support for his campaign, a point he returned to Wednesday at the Miami forum hosted by the Spanish-language TV network Univision.

"I know that I'm not going to get 100 percent of the vote and my campaign will focus on those people we think we can bring in to support me, but this is a campaign about helping people who need help," Romney said.

"My campaign is about the 100 percent in America," he said.

The forum, which was broadcast nationally in Spanish from a swing state that could help decide the presidential contest, was an opportunity to court Hispanics. That growing voting bloc overwhelmingly supported President Barack Obama four years ago.

However, the televised session initially focused on the caught-on-tape remarks, the latest in a string of missteps on domestic and foreign policy for the Republican candidate seven weeks out from Election Day.

Speaking to Romney in Spanish, the Univision hosts peppered him with questions about the video before turning to his reluctance to clarify his immigration policy and to his support for Arizona's controversial immigration law.

Romney backed away from his support earlier in the year for policies that would promote "self-deportation" of illegal immigrants. He said he supported policies that might give legal status to young illegal immigrants who serve in the military or pursue higher education.

"We're not going to round up people around the country and deport them," he said. "We need to provide a long-term solution."

He declined to detail his solution, despite being pressed by the hosts.

Romney assailed Obama for failing to deliver campaign promises to overhaul the nation's immigration system.

"He never tried to fix the immigration system," Romney said of the Democratic incumbent. "I will actually reform the immigration system and make it work for the people of America."

The Obama campaign responded by arguing that Hispanic voters have reason not to trust Romney.

"On critical issues, he continued to refuse to answer any of the tough questions or provide any specifics on what he'd do as president," Obama campaign official Stephanie Cutter said in a statement.

Obama is scheduled to participate in the same forum on Thursday.

Now, LastPass has partnered with PwnedList, a database of publicly leaked usernames and passwords, to create LastPass Sentry. Sentry checks PwnedList's database daily for email addresses and matches it against your LastPass vault. If it finds any matching emails, it'll send you a notice that your account has been breached and that you need to change your password. It's a much, much easier way to keep up with any security breaches that happen around the net, and while it's no replacement for good security habits, it's one more way to keep your accounts safe and secure. hit the link to read more.

Twitter revamps its iPad app for expanded content, adds header photos and image streams

Twitter revamps its iPad app for expanded content, adds header shots and photo streams

Twitter's iPad app is sometimes the neglected stepchild of its mobile app family: newer features usually come to the Android and iPhone versions first and are handed down to the iPad later, if they come at all. The company is making amends for that in style with a major update to the iPad version as of today. Whether you like them or not, expanded tweets are now baked in and will optionally show some photos, videos and web links within the timeline rather than disrupting the entire experience. The Connect, Discover and Me sections we've seen elsewhere also come to the tablet-tuned app, albeit at the expense of more quickly finding direct messages and lists.

You'll soon notice a much more visual spin on people's profiles, regardless of whether or not Apple's slate factors into the daily routine. Both the Twitter site as well as the official Android and iOS apps now show a header photo behind the bio to provide a little more color than avatars and background pictures can manage. If you're on one of the mobile platforms, you'll also see a photo stream in the profile that will help relive memories without hunting down individual tweets. The phone and tablet makeovers require an update to shine, so hit the relevant source link if you're ready for a prettier (if not always more functional) social experience.

Taliban Raid On NATO Base Inflicted Severe Damage - NYTimes.com

www.nytimes.com:

KABUL, Afghanistan -- An audacious Taliban attack on a heavily fortified base in southern Afghanistan did far more damage than initially reported, destroying or severely damaging eight attack jets in the most destructive single strike on Western mat?riel in the 11-year war, military officials said Sunday.

New Syria envoy visits refugees in Turkey, Jordan

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? The new international envoy tasked with ending the 18-month conflict in Syria visited refugee camps in Jordan and Turkey on Tuesday, saying that he hopes the Syrians will find peace soon.

But in Jordan, some angry refugees protested his visit ? an indication of widespread skepticism that a mission that Lakhdar Brahimi himself has called "nearly impossible" will bring results.

Some 200 refugees at the Zaatari desert camp chanted, "Leave our camp. By seeing Bashar, you've extended his life." They were referring to Brahimi's earlier meetings with Syrian President Bashar Assad. Some teenagers threw stones at the vehicles of the envoy's entourage, an Associated Press reporter said.

Brahimi also toured a camp in the Turkish border province of Hatay. Dozens of Syrian refugees demonstrated outside the camp, waving a rebel flag and denouncing Assad.

With no signs of the crisis abating, activists estimate that some 23,000 people have been killed and the U.N. says over 250,000 people have become refugees in Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq. Some 83,000 refugees have found shelter in 12 camps along the Turkish border with Syria.

Brahimi said it appeared refugees were being treated well in Turkey and that he hoped for an end to the violence.

"We hope that their country finds peace again and they can return to their country as early as possible," he said.

Also Tuesday, Turkey's Foreign Ministry brushed off Syrian accusations that it was allowing thousands of Muslim extremists to cross into its territory.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Selcuk Unal told reporters that Turkey may not even respond to letters Syria sent to the U.N. Security Council and Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon accusing Turkey of allowing thousands of terrorists access to the country.

"Instead of leveling complaints and making false accusations against various countries, including ours, Syria should look at the situation inside the country and take the necessary steps to correct the situation," Unal said.

Fujifilm X-E1 hands-on

Fujifilm XE1 mirrorless handson

Sure the XF1's nice to look at, but the real star of Fujifilm's 2012 Photokina lineup has to be the X-E1. The X-Pro1's little sibling offers up most of the functionality of its bigger, pricier brother -- save for its inclusion just an electronic viewfinder -- into a body that's roughly a third smaller. That said, this is hardly a compact mirrorless -- the X-E1's still got a bit of girth and weight to it, compared to some of the smaller entries in the field. Still, it feels nice in the hand and isn't likely to weigh down your shooting -- particularly for those accustom to using a larger DSLR. It's also worth pointing out, right off the bat, that the retro-styled interchangeable lens camera is significantly cheaper, running you $700 less than the X-Pro-1.

Flip the camera over and you get a 2.8-inch 460k-dot LCD. Just above the display is a devoted button that will pop up the retractable flash directly above. The X-E1 will be hitting stores in April, carrying a $1,000 price tag. Buy a kit with a lens and you'll still come in $300 under the X-Pro1's $1,700 price tag, making for a full-featured and great looking little mirrorless for a lot less money.
