Romney campaign starts accepting political donations by text

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Republican presidential campaign said on Friday it was launching a system to accept campaign donations by text message.

The system, aimed at encouraging contributions from small donors to the campaign of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, will rival a similar scheme launched by Democratic President Barack Obama's team last week.

"We recognize that people lead busy lives, but they still want to support Governor Romney with whatever means they have," said Zac Moffatt, Romney campaign's digital director.

"This technology gives our incredible supporters the ability to make a donation in seconds - not minutes - with a text message."

Romney supporters in the United States will be able to donate to his campaign by texting the word GIVE to number 37377. Obama supporters can do the same by texting GIVE to 62262.

Text donations were first approved in early June and have been touted as a means of enabling smaller donors to contribute to a campaign marked by six-figure donations.

They can be made anonymously but have to be capped at $10 per text, $50 per month and $200 in total for one candidate or campaign. Donations are prohibited from foreigners, people under 18 or corporations, which could also mean corporate phone accounts.

The Obama campaign's small-donor prowess helped it set fundraising records and win the 2008 election. In this campaign it has been raising a notably larger portion of cash from small checks than Romney to help fund what is likely to be the most expensive U.S. election in history.

Analysts say the moves to secure donations by text message could amount to a revolution in a U.S. campaign finance, which has traditionally been dominated by multimillion-dollar donations.

The process of political giving via text would be similar to giving to charity: A donor would send a short message to a text code, confirm intention and eligibility, and later pay for the donation as part of the monthly cell phone bill.

What do you say to the most annoying fostering ... - Adoption Forums

I usually say, "Yes, it's very difficult to say goodbye, but we grieve and get through it." Then I usually add something about how we take a break between placements to regroup. If I'm in a bad mood/unfiltered, I say, "We're grown-ups; we can process our emotions."

Because to me, it's sort of like saying, "I could never have a friend--I'd get too attached. I should never have had parents--I got so attached." Have these people never loved anyone and had to say goodbye to them? And if they did, did they get through it?

I find this comment annoying because it also implies that I don't get as attached as they would, because my heart is so hard.

Barclays faces SFO probe on Qatar payments

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's fraud prosecutors have launched a criminal probe into payments between Barclays and Qatar Holding, the British bank confirmed, adding to an ongoing regulatory investigation into dealings between the two parties.

Barclays said on Wednesday that the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) started an investigation into "payments under certain commercial agreements" between it and Qatar, confirming an earlier report.

The Financial Services Authority (FSA), Britain's financial watchdog, is already investigating the bank and four current and former senior employees, including finance director Chris Lucas, on whether sufficient disclosures were made about the fees it paid in a 2008 capital raising.

Barclays disclosed the FSA investigation when it released half-year results on July 27. It relates to fees paid to the Qatar Investment Authority on deals in June and November 2008, when Barclays raised 11.5 billion pounds.

The SFO probe differs as it is examining the bank, rather than the bank plus four individuals.

The bank did not reveal which payments between it and Qatar were being investigated by the SFO, although the FSA is expected to share information with the SFO that it has obtained, and both are expected to ask for further information from the bank.

Qatar Holding, the entity involved in the investigation, is a unit of the Qatar Investment Authority, which is the largest shareholder in Barclays with a 6.65 percent stake, according to Reuters data.

The bank is reeling after being fined 290 million pounds by British and U.S. regulators in June for rigging Libor interest rates, sparking criticism about its culture and risk-taking and forcing its chairman and chief executive to quit.

Barclays said on Wednesday management consultancy firm Boston Consulting Group was to support a review into its business practices that is being led by Antony Salz.

Former Deloitte partner Russell Collins was also named as Salz's deputy. The independent report is due by April.

Ohio doctor helps perpetuate rape pregnancy ideas

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? The discredited notion that a woman's body can resist conception in a sexual assault has persisted in anti-abortion circles for decades, largely because of the efforts of a Cincinnati obstetrician who is considered a godfather of the movement.

Dr. John C. "Jack" Willke founded the National Right to Life Committee and wrote the influential 1971 "Handbook on Abortion," which has shaped the thinking of generations of anti-abortion activists.

Rep. Todd Akin's comments this week on rape and pregnancy helped upend a Senate race and roiled the Republican Party in a tough election year. But they reflect ideas that the 87-year-old Willke began peddling years ago.

"There's no greater emotional trauma that can be experienced by a woman than an assault rape," Willke wrote in 1999 in the journal Christian Life Resources. "This can radically upset her possibility of ovulation, fertilization, implantation and even nurturing of a pregnancy."

To anti-abortion activists, Willke is a revered figure. To abortion-rights activists, the onetime sex education lecturer perpetuates myths, eschews facts and ignores science. And to fellow physicians, his ideas are pure fiction.

After Akin's remarks, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said a woman who is raped "has no control over ovulation, fertilization or implantation of a fertilized egg. ... To suggest otherwise contradicts basic biological truths."

Still, the last time Willke appeared at the Ohio Statehouse, GOP lawmakers were "almost worshipful," recalled Cincinnati attorney Al Gerhardstein, an abortion-rights proponent who has often debated Willke. "He's always been a very sincere, passionate advocate for his cause. And I've always been wary that he doesn't let the facts get in the way."

The doctor and his wife, Barbara, have six children. They were prompted to write the handbook by their daughters, who complained about encountering what they regarded as bad information on the subject in college.

The book became an instant touchstone for the anti-abortion movement, selling 1.5 million copies at the height of the sexual revolution.

The authors asserted that a douche, vaginal scraping and medications administered quickly after a rape "invariably" prevents pregnancy. "If the rape victim would report her assault properly, there would be, for all practical purposes, no pregnancies from rape," the couple wrote.

In an interview Monday with The Associated Press, Willke stood by the 1999 article that said sexual assault brings on hormonal changes that could interfere with conception. He also defended Akin, saying the congressman's main mistake was a reference to "legitimate rape," not his statement that women rarely get pregnant from sexual assault.

Anti-abortion activist Janet Folger Porter has Willke's handbook in her reference library. She said it's popular worldwide because it isn't filled with emotional arguments and religious dogma, but hard facts.

"It's spelled out in Q-and-A form," she said. "The whole thing is not Dr. Willke's opinion or dissertation on the issue. It's independent studies, all of them cited, by issue."

The son and grandson of doctors, Willke married Barbara, a nursing professor, writer and lecturer, in 1948. Together they taught pre-marriage and marriage courses for the Catholic church, and became a popular doctor-and-nurse team speaking on sex, love and eventually abortion. Their first book was "The Wonder of Sex," a 1964 sex education guide.

Willke built a busy obstetric practice and emerged as Cincinnati's leading expert on conception.

After the Supreme Court's landmark Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion, he put himself at the center of the issue, appearing frequently at protests, Capitol Hill hearings and on national television. He quit practicing medicine in 1988 to devote his full energy to the movement he helped create.

Gerhardstein said the Republican-controlled state Legislature still defers to Willke. Last spring, Willke visited the Statehouse to promote a bill that would impose the nation's most severe abortion restriction, limiting the procedure at the first detectable fetal heartbeat.

After a hearing on the bill, which is still stalled, Willke was invited by the Republican House speaker to ascend the dais and address the assembled legislators.

"I'm thinking, boy, I've never gotten that kind of treatment," Gerhardstein recalled.

Doctors edge closer to identifying heart risks | FOX6Now.com - WITI

1-Developing_400x225

(CNN) ? More than 1 million people in the United States will have a heart attack this year. Most will occur in people with no symptoms.

With better prediction methods for cardiovascular disease, many of those could be prevented.

Two new studies in the Journal of the American Medical Association explore methods for helping doctors identify patients who are at greatest risk for heart problems. They are not definitive, and still point to unanswered questions, but represent a continued fight against the most common killer in the United States.

One new study found that coronary artery calcium was about six times better at predicting cardiovascular risk than a family history of coronary heart disease.

The heart?s arteries can develop a substance called plaque in their walls. Cholesterol and other cells compose the plaque. Too much plaque buildup can trigger a heart attack.

A coronary calcium scan assesses whether there are any specks of calcium in the walls of the arteries. These calcifications are an early sign of plaque buildup.

There are about 28 million Americans in the ?intermediate risk? group for cardiac events, which means that doctors aren?t sure how to treat them or how to tell which of them is most likely to have a heart attack, said Dr. Joseph Yeboah, lead study author and cardiologist at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

About 7,000 participants, 1,330 of whom had intermediate risk, were included in the study. Researchers compared six different markers of risk, and found that the calcium was superior to the rest.

The cost for the calcium test varies, but is usually about $200, Yeboah said.

?The cost issue should always be weighed against how much is society prepared to spend for a heart attack,? he said.

The cost of treating a person with a heart attack could be more than a thousand times higher than the cost of the calcium test, he said. Additionally, many people die from their first heart attack.

?The current study in JAMA on coronary CT imaging should convince physicians and the public alike that if you are middle-aged, have some risk factors for heart disease, and want to greatly improve your knowledge of what your risk truly is, you should get a calcium score,? said Dr. Arthur Agatston, a Miami cardiologist and author of the best-selling South Beach diet books, in an e-mail.

Agatston created the calcium score, first published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology in 1991. He did not invent the scan to detect it, however, and does not profit from it.

Agatston, who was not involved in this study, praised the test in the 2011 CNN documentary ?The Last Heart Attack.?

?It is the single best predictor of who is headed for a heart attack and who is not, and is thus the best way to know who needs aggressive lifestyle and pharmacological intervention and who doesn?t,? he said this week.

Besides costs, one potential issue is the radiation involved in the test, which is about 1 millisievert. That?s about one-third the amount of radiation Americans are exposed to from the environment in one year, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. A CT scan to the head is 2 mSv.

Still, it?s unclear what effect the radiation from the calcium test would have over time, especially since there has not been a set standard for the radiation involved in the test, Yeboah said. The FDA has not weighed in about this test.

Although many insurance companies do not cover the calcium test, some people pay out of pocket for it anyway, Yeboah said. It is unclear whether the test has helped those people specifically.

Former President Bill Clinton told CNN?s Dr. Sanjay Gupta in ?The Last Heart Attack? that he?d had one of these scans just months after leaving office, but doctors weren?t sure what to do with the results since the technology was so new.

Clinton said he had ?some calcium buildup around my heart that put me basically in the top third of risk,? but did so well on the stress test that doctors said there wasn?t any evidence of blockage.

In 2004, Clinton experienced tightness in his chest, which turned out to be a serious symptom. He underwent quadruple bypass surgery to restore blood flow to his heart. And in 2010, he needed another procedure: two stents to open a vein from his bypass surgery.

More research should be done to further evaluate the costs and benefits of this calcium test, Yeboah said.

A second new study evaluated the benefits of a different kind of screening test: carotid intimal medial thickness. This involves an ultrasound measurement of the thickness of the carotid artery.

The carotid artery is a blood vessel leading to the brain, delivering blood to the brain and face. The thickness of the walls is thought to be a risk factor for cardiac events such as heart attack.

Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 14 different studies worldwide, encompassing about 46,000 participants. Study authors wrote that their results suggest that the added value of conducting a carotid intimal medial thickness test was small and ?unlikely to be of clinical importance.?

Their results pertain to a 10-year risk outlook, meaning the study measured the likelihood of a cardiac event within 10 years of the test. But the authors wrote that additional research could find this test may be useful for 20- or 30-year outlooks.

This analysis has limitations, however ? there may be inconsistencies in how cardiac events were determined across the different studies, and there was variation in the use of cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins across the different groups.

A risk assessment based on factors such as age, gender and blood pressure is about as good at predicting cardiovascular disease likelihood as carotid intimal medial thickness, said study co-author Dr. Michiel Bots, of the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care of the University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands.

While the arterial wall thickness measurement may predict the occurrence of disease, it does not help doctors decide whether a patient should be treated with lipid-lowering or blood-pressure-lowering drugs, Bots said.

But the carotid ultrasound test is inexpensive, and can be easily and safely performed in a doctor?s office, Agatston said.

The test can also image atherosclerotic plaques, although this particular study did not separately analyze the presence of plaques. Plaque in the carotid artery is a warning sign for risk of heart attack and stroke.

For prediction and management of cardiac risk in some patients, Agatston believes there is a place for this test.

Collective motion in schools of fish can evolve as finely tuned defense against attack from predators: Virtual fish simulation

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? A video game designed for predatory fish might have unraveled some lingering evolutionary questions about group formation and movement in animals, according to new research that took a unique approach to observing interactions between real and simulated animals.

Princeton University researchers report in the journal Science some of the strongest direct evidence that collective motion in animal groups such as schools of fish can evolve as a finely tuned defense against attack from predators. This dynamic has been suggested by other research, but the many variables that can drive group movement have made it difficult to observe a direct link to self-defense, explained senior researcher Iain Couzin, an assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Princeton who studies collective animal behavior.

Couzin and his colleagues developed an evolvable simulation of small prey that allowed the researchers to observe how group formation and movement alone protect against predatory attack. Couzin developed and conducted the study at Princeton with two former postdoctoral researchers from his lab, first author Christos Ioannou, now a research fellow at the University of Bristol, and Vishwesha Guttal, now an assistant professor of ecological sciences at the Indian Institute of Science.

The researchers projected the simulated prey -- which appeared as small reddish dots -- onto one side of a tank containing the famously ravenous bluegill sunfish. The prey interacted spontaneously with one another based on encoded behavior traits, and the researchers documented in the prey the resulting individual behaviors and group formations. In the end, the bluegills were most likely to avoid attacking simulated prey that had formed coordinated and mobile groups.

These results show that group formation itself can dissuade a predator, even if the prey -- as in the simulation -- are completely unaware of the danger, the researchers report. This suggests that the specific configuration of animal groups is an evolved defense in its own right, Couzin explained. The ideal configurations exhibited by the simulated prey mirror those of many animal groups, wherein individuals follow cues from their near-neighbors to coordinate collective movement.

"This sort of hybrid virtual approach has given us a way of tapping into these long-lasting questions that have really evaded standard analysis for decades," Couzin said.

"To conduct this type of study is very intensive in terms of statistics and creating control models of what predators would have done, given the prey that were available to them in that particular situation at that time and compare that to the behavior of the real behavior," Couzin said. "And that's one of the reasons why these studies have been so difficult in the past using classic experimental means."

An important aspect of the simulation is that it let the researchers control the behavior of individual prey, Couzin said. In nature, animals can respond to a predator in different and unpredictable ways -- animals might react as the predator approaches or after the initial attack. In addition, group cohesion depends on the number of animals assembled and environmental factors such as terrain.

For the Princeton study, the researchers encoded each individual prey with various strengths of three traits -- a tendency to be attracted to, swim in the same direction as, or ignore nearby individuals. Thus, individual prey would either swim alone, group together, or follow other prey, or exhibit a combination of traits.

Julia Parrish, a University of Washington professor of aquatic and fishery sciences, said that the level of control Couzin and his colleagues had over prey behavior, and testing the predator's reaction to that behavior, sets their experiment apart from others based on real and simulated animal interactions. Parrish is familiar with the Princeton study, but had no role in it.

"The beauty of this experiment is that the researchers systematically vary the rules that the individual simulated prey play by, which dictates the structure of the resulting group," Parrish said. "They're like the little man behind the curtain moving three dials up and down -- attraction, repulsion and alignment. Then they say, 'Okay, bluegills, give it your best shot. How good are you at attacking prey based on how we set the rules?'"

This approach resulted in a "significant first step" toward a metric that can quantify how individual behaviors influence the safety of the group during a predator attack, Parrish said.

"This experiment makes some very specific predictions about what's a good configuration and what's not a good configuration, and gives some insight into what the rules of aggregation might be," she said.

"We don't know the rules prey use," Parrish said. "We can watch them, we can track them and infer what the rules are, but we don't actually know what they are. What this study did is bypass that messiness and make up the prey then see what a real predator does. That simplification is the innovation."

Once the simulation began the individual prey would swim and form groups spontaneously. Each trial consisted of 16 prey and one bluegill predator. Only the first attack by each bluegill was recorded. A new bluegill was put in the tank after the researchers restarted the simulation and the prey began moving and interacting with each other.

"Effectively, the bluegills were playing an immersive video game in which they hunted," Couzin said.

"By evolving the prey groupings, the game becomes harder and harder for the predators, as when a video game adapts to the strategy employed by the players," he said. "In a similar way, our prey 'evolved' to the mode of hunting that the bluegills exhibited, adapting better strategies that allowed them to evade hunting more effectively."

Naturally, the researchers found that simulated prey that formed groups "survived" better than those that swam alone. But individuals in groups also needed to strike a balance of closeness and coordinated movement to keep the bluegills at bay, the researchers reported.

Large groups that did not move much eventually fell victim to attacks in "high-risk" areas of the projected space in which bluegills preferentially attacked. Yet when groups of prey moved with coordination, they passed through these high-risk areas too quickly for each individual bluegill to make its attack.

Although the project used bluegills, Parrish said, the catalog of formation possibilities the researchers developed leave room to understand how individual behavior and movement influences other predators such as tuna, which target large groups.

"We could systematically go through all the combinations this study presents and see what a predator actually responds to," Parrish said.

'Nasdaq's Facebook IPO compensation plan inadequate'

NEW YORK: Nasdaq OMX Group Inc's proposed $62 million compensation plan for the fallout from the Facebook IPO is "inadequate to address the magnitude of Nasdaq's unprecedented failures", UBS Securities LLC said in a letter to US regulators.

UBS Securities, an arm of Swiss bank UBS AG, said it alone lost over $350 million when the lack of timely order confirmations due to Nasdaq technical malfunctions during the IPO caused UBS's systems to re-enter orders multiple times.

UBS also said the types of claims for trading losses that Nasdaq agrees to compensate "should be expanded to include the full extent of losses caused by Nasdaq, and that the requirement that participants in the program release other legitimate claims they may have against Nasdaq is fundamentally unfair".

"Simply put, Nasdaq's proposal to pay $62 million in the aggregate for all Facebook-related claims is woefully inadequate," UBS said in the letter to the US Securities and Exchange Commission dated Aug. 22.

Obama mocks Akin, says Akin missed science class

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is mocking Senate candidate Todd Akin of Missouri for his remarks about a woman's body being able to avoid pregnancy during what Akin called a "legitimate rape."

Obama tells a group of donors in New York that the Republican congressman from Missouri "somehow missed science class" even though he sits on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

Obama says Akin's remarks are representative of what Obama called "the desire to go backwards instead of forwards and fight fights that we thought were settled 20 or 30 years ago."

Akin has refused calls from within the GOP to drop his bid to challenge Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill. He made the remarks in a TV interview last Sunday while defending his opposition to abortion in all circumstances.

A rivalry taking root between Tiger, McIlroy

(AP) ? The message from Jack Nicklaus still resonates with Tiger Woods.

They were chatting during a practice round at the Presidents Cup nine years ago in South Africa when the topic turned to the various rivals Nicklaus faced over a 25-year stretch of winning majors. Nicklaus told him that day, "Just make sure you're always part of the conversation."

Woods was reminded of that chat Wednesday at The Barclays, when he stood in the back of the room as PGA champion Rory McIlroy finished up his interview.

McIlroy is his latest rival. It's the first time Woods has faced a serious challenger who was younger than him.

"I always wanted to be part of that conversation," Woods said after his pro-am round at Bethpage Black. "That's the neat thing about what Jack had done. He crossed generations, and when you're a part of that conversation for the better part of 25 years, that's saying something. I was kind of hoping when I started off my career I'd be part of that conversation for that length of time."

McIlroy, coming off an eight-shot win at Kiawah Island for his second major, considers it a compliment that he would be mentioned alongside Woods, and he is respectful of everything Woods has accomplished in 17 incomparable years on the PGA Tour.

But the 23-year-old from Northern Ireland can have a little fun.

Woods and McIlroy will be playing together the opening two rounds of The Barclays because the tour groups players based on their FedEx Cup standings during the playoffs. Woods is No. 1 for the fourth time in the six-year history of this series, while McIlroy is No. 3. Zach Johnson will be along for the ride.

McIlroy was asked if he looked forward to playing with Woods, and how much he would love to face him next month in Sunday singles in the Ryder Cup at Medinah.

"It really focuses you from the get-go, a pairing like that," he said. "I feel every time I've played with Tiger, he's sort of brought the best out of me. I really feel focused and obviously want to play well. I'm looking forward to it. I really enjoy his company. I know we'll have a good time out there."

About that point, he noticed Woods had come into the room and was waiting by the back door.

"I'm keeping him waiting here," McIlroy said. "So I'll stop talking about him."

Not so fast.

About that singles match at the Ryder Cup everyone would love to see?

"Yeah, I'd love to go out there," McIlroy said. "I'd love Tiger to go out first and kick his (behind)."

Woods joined in the spontaneous laughter. McIlroy finished up his interview a few minutes later, and as he moved away from the table, he waited by door until Woods walked by and they slapped hands. If a rivalry blossoms, all indications are it will be a friendly one.

There was a tense moment two years ago, when Woods' game was at its lowest level and McIlroy was quoted as saying he would love to face Woods in the Ryder Cup unless his game rapidly improved. Woods was coming off the highest score of his professional career. It was reminiscent of when Stephen Ames poked fun of Woods' accuracy before they faced each other in the first round of the Match Play Championship. Woods won, 9 and 8.

This was different. Woods' initial reaction to the comment was, "At least Rory said, 'Unless my game improves.'" They didn't play each other that week in Wales.

Now, the anticipation is building for the first round Thursday at Bethpage Black, where Woods won the U.S. Open in 2002 and tied for sixth when it last came to Long Island during a rainy week in 2009.

The Black doesn't need to have a U.S. Open to be a tough test. The greens are not as firm. The rough is not as dense, though it still should be avoided.

Woods and McIlroy in the same group has taken focus away from the start of these playoffs. The top 100 in the standings advance to the second round at the Deutsche Bank Championship, and then the top 70 move on to the BMW Championship. The top 30 reach the FedEx Cup finale at the Tour Championship, and the winner gets $10 million, the richest payoff in golf.

There are sure to be a few long shots who advance, like Heath Slocum three years ago when he won The Barclays. Some guys might not make it out of the first round.

For now, there are only Tiger and Rory.

"He's a great kid and it's great to be around him," Woods said. "What an amazing talent he really is. I just hope that everyone just lets him grow and develop as a player because it's going to be fun to see over the next 20 years how this kid's career is going to pan out."

From the time he turned pro, Woods had a revolving door of rivals ? Ernie Els, David Duval, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh. None of them lasted very long. What makes McIlroy more compelling as a rival is that he is a generation younger.

In recent history, those rivalries turn out the best. Nicklaus was 10 years younger than Arnold Palmer when they battled at the U.S. Opens and Masters. Nicklaus was 10 years older than Tom Watson when Watson got him at the Masters and British Open.

By winning the PGA Championship, McIlroy collected his second major at a slightly younger age than Woods. More significantly, however, is that McIlroy twice has won majors by blowing away the field by eight shots. In the last 35 years, only Woods had won a major by that many shots (three times).

McIlroy headed out to get some lunch and go to the practice range, and Woods took his spot behind the table for his interview. He talked about being back at Bethpage, which plays to a par 71 this week, and the busy stretch of four playoff events, capped off by the Ryder Cup.

And he was reminded of what McIlroy said about Medinah, and whether he was ready to take a beating from Boy Wonder in the Ryder Cup.

Woods leaned toward the microphone, smiled and said, "No."

Multiple factors, including climate change, led to collapse and depopulation of ancient Maya

ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2012) ? A new analysis of complex interactions between humans and the environment preceding the 9th century collapse and abandonment of the Central Maya Lowlands in the Yucat?n Peninsula points to a series of events -- some natural, like climate change; some human-made, including large-scale landscape alterations and shifts in trade routes -- that have lessons for contemporary decision-makers and sustainability scientists.

In their revised model of the collapse of the ancient Maya, social scientists B.L. "Billie" Turner and Jeremy "Jerry" A. Sabloff provide an up-to-date, human-environment systems theory in which they put together the degree of environmental and economic stress in the area that served as a trigger or tipping point for the Central Maya Lowlands.

The co-authors described the Classic Period of the Lowland Maya (CE 300-800) as a "highly complex civilization organized into networks of city-states," in their perspective article published Aug. 21 in the online Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The ancient Maya in this hilly and riverless region confronted long-term climatic aridification, experienced decadal to century-level or longer droughts amplified by the landscape changes that they made, including large-scale deforestation indicated in the paleoecological record.

Previous to the collapse, the Maya occupied the area for more than 2,000 years, noted the authors, "a time in which they developed a sophisticated understanding of their environment, built and sustained intensive production [and water] systems, and withstood at least two long-term episodes of aridity."

They document the human-environment interactions that were severely stressed during the 9th century arid phase. "This environmental stress was complemented by a shift in commercial trade from across the peninsula to around it, which reduced the economy of the ruling elite to keep up the livelihood infrastructure to prevent the tipping point," said Turner, a Distinguished Sustainability Scientist with the Global Institute of Sustainability at Arizona State University.

"The decision was made to vacate the central lowlands rather than maintain the investment. This theory is not only consistent with the data on collapse but on the failure of the central lowlands to be reoccupied subsequently," said Turner.

"It acknowledges the role of climate change and anthropogenic environmental change, while also recognizing the role of commerce and choice," he said.

Co-author Sabloff noted that rather than a monolithic period of collapse, there were many variable patterns, which is consistent with the thesis Turner and he advance.

"The only way to explain the variability is to take a complex systems view," said Sabloff, president of the Santa Fe Institute.

"The Maya case lends insights for the use of paleo- and historical analogs to inform contemporary global environment change and sustainability," wrote the authors. "Balance between the extremes of generalization and context is required.

"Climate change, specifically aridity, was an important exogenous forcing on human-environment conditions throughout the Maya Lowlands," they concluded. "Complex system interactions generated the collapse and depopulation of the (Central Maya Lowlands) and fostered its long-term abandonment. This lesson -- increasingly voiced in the literature -- should be heeded in the use of analogs for sustainability science."

Muamba retires after suffering cardiac arrest

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:13 p.m. ET Aug. 15, 2012

BOLTON, England (AP) -Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba retired from football Wednesday after suffering an on-field cardiac arrest in March during an FA Cup quarterfinal against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Muamba travelled to Belgium last week to seek further medical advice from a cardiologist after consultations in Britain and Europe, and has been advised to retire from playing at the professional level.

"While the news is devastating, I have much to be thankful for," Muamba said. "I thank God that I am alive and I pay tribute once again to the members of the medical team who never gave up on me."

Muamba collapsed to the pitch in north London on March 17, where the game was immediately abandoned.

Andrew Deaner, a cardiologist who was in the stands when Muamba collapsed, left his seat and rushed on to the pitch to help treat him.

Muamba's heart stopped beating on its own for 78 minutes, but started again after arriving at the London Chest Hospital. He was eventually discharged on April 16.

In May, Muamba returned to Bolton's Reebok stadium to a standing ovation and tearfully acknowledged the crowd.

"Football has been my life since I was a teenage boy and it has given me so many opportunities," Muamba said. "Above all else, I love the game and count myself very lucky to have been able to play at the highest level.

"I would also like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my career, and the Bolton fans who have been incredible."

Bolton manager Owen Coyle praised Muamba's character during his recovery.

"Everyone has seen what a fighter and strong person he is in mind and body," said Coyle. "We know that he will go on to achieve great things and within all this disappointment, the most important thing is that he is here, alive, today."

The 24-year-old Muamba began his career at London club Arsenal before joining Birmingham in 2007. He signed for Bolton the following year.

Muamba played 211 games in all competitions during his professional career, scoring six goals.
