Sharp Pantone 5 ICS phone has 8 color choices, 3.7-inch screen -- oh, and a radiation detector

Color us shocked and jealous at the new Android 4.0 phone from Sharp -- strange and wonderful even by Japan's highly elevated standards. The eight colors of the 3.7-inch Pantone branded phone from carrier Softbank are nice for sure, but the ability to sense between .005 and 9.99 μSv/h of radiation is in a new category altogether. Though Sharp has hedged a bit by describing the detector as "non-compliant" with Japan standards at this point, the possibilities seem endless for such a feature -- the ability to constantly report your location and radiation level to Facebook comes to mind, for instance. It will be offered -- in Japan only, we presume -- with a 4-megapixel rear camera, eight Pantone colors, 0.3-megapixel front camera, 854 x 480 resolution, and will be dust-proof and waterproof. The price hasn't been discussed yet, but we can't imagine too much quibbling whatever it is, for a phone that could keep you gamma-ray safe.

In a recent Supreme Court decision, hundreds of thousands of already deported aliens (immigrants) or those currently in removal proceedings due to criminal convictions (guilty pleas or, quite possibly, convictions that resulted following a trial), may have the opportunity to either return to the United States and seek immigration relief or to seek an otherwise unavailable form of immigration relief if already in deportation proceedings.

In Judulang v. Holder, No. 10?694, December 12, 2011, the Supreme Court listened to the case of a Lawful Permanent Resident who had lived in the United States since 1974.? The Legal Immigrant pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in 1988, over ten years after his first entry into the United States.? In 2005, the United States? Department of Homeland Security initiated removal/deportation proceedings against the immigrant after he was convicted of another crime.

The Government charged the permanent resident as being deportable for having committed an ?aggravated felony,? as defined in immigration law, a body of law commonly referred to as the Immigration & Nationality Act or the ?INA.?? Federal immigration authorities argued that the immigrant was an aggravated felon because his 1988 voluntary manslaughter conviction fell within the definition of a ?crime of violence,? as written in the aggravated felony provision of the immigration law.

The hard working and long term permanent resident was facing deportation for a crime he had committed nearly fifteen years ago.? The Immigration Judge denied the permanent resident any immigration relief, refusing him the opportunity to apply for deportation relief under Section 212(c) of the Immigration & Nationality Act.? The Board of Immigration Appeals dismissed the immigrant?s appeal and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with the Immigration Judge and the Board of Immigration Appeals.

The Supreme Court, however, decided to hear the legal immigrant?s story and took a stand that shocked many.? The Supreme Court broke new ground in holding that a class? (composed of, possibly, hundreds of thousands of otherwise deportable aliens ((or aliens currently in deportation/removal proceeding or already ordered deported/removed)), who were deported as a result of a criminal conviction that is years old, have the opportunity to return to the United States and reargue their immigration case or, if the alien is currently in removal proceedings, the immigrant may now be able to assert a form of relief that was not otherwise available.

The basic requirements for 212(c) relief are that the alien who is in deportation proceedings (1) had resided as a Lawful Permanent Resident for seven years calculated in reverse of either the date of the conviction or prior to the date that the immigrant applies for 212(c) relief; (2) be deportable as a result of a guilty plea or a conviction following a trial where the plea agreement or the conviction occurred before a certain date in the mid-1990s; and (3) where the good things in the alien?s life outweigh the bad things in the individual alien?s life.

?The Supreme Court essentially ruled that those who were not eligible for a certain form of easily available relief from deportation are now eligible for it.? Also, if someone is now facing deportation because of a crime they committed years ago, a new avenue is now open for the person who is facing deportation to save him or herself from being forced to return to the country that person immigrated from,? said Raymond Lahoud, an immigration law and deportation defense attorney from the Pennsylvania-based law firm Baurkot & Baurkot.

A person who has already been deported may file a Motion to Reopen his or her deportation proceedings and have another day before an immigration court.? Immigrants who are now in removal proceedings may have the opportunity to ask the Immigration Judge for another, easier to secure, form of relief.

?Timing is important here as any motions related to this excellent Supreme Court decision,? said Lahoud, ?must be filed within a month of the decision.? It is imperative that those who are facing deportation or have been already deported to contact an experienced deportation defense attorney.?

BEIRUT (AP) ? The U.N.'s human rights office said Tuesday that most of the 108 victims of a massacre in Syria last week were shot at close range, some of them women, children and entire families gunned down in their own homes.

The massacre on Friday in Houla drew new international outrage, with more than half a dozen countries including France and Britain expelling Syrian diplomats in protest.

The U.N. report indicated that most of the dead were killed execution-style, with fewer than 20 people cut down by regime shelling. The U.N. cited survivors and witnesses blaming the house-to-house killings on pro-government thugs known as shabiha, who often operate as hired muscle for the regime.

"What is very clear is this was an absolutely abominable event that took place in Houla, and at least a substantial part of it was summary executions of civilians, women and children," said Rupert Colville, spokesman for the U.N. High commissioner for Human Rights. "At this point, it looks like entire families were shot in their houses."

Houla activists reached by Skype said government troops shelled the area after anti-government protests on Friday and clashed with local rebels. Later, shabiha from nearby villages swept through the area, stabbing residents and shooting them at close range.

Videos posted online by anti-regime activists show explosions in Houla, dismembered bodies lying in the streets, then row upon row of the dead laid out before being buried in a mass grave. Some of the videos showed dozens of dead children, some with gaping wounds.

The Syrian regime has denied any role in the massacre, blaming the killings on "armed terrorists" who attacked army positions in the area and slaughtered innocent civilians. But it has provided no evidence to support its narrative nor has it given a death toll.

U.N. investigators have said they found tank and artillery shells in Houla after the attack, but stopped short of blaming regime forces for the killings.

The U.N. said that at least 108 people, including 34 women and 49 children, were killed in the attack that began on Friday and continued through the night on a group of poor farming villages northwest of the central city of Homs.

Speaking to reporters in Geneva, Colville said U.N. monitors who visited the area found that fewer than 20 of the dead were killed by artillery fire. The rest appeared to have been shot at close range.

He said information from U.N. investigators and other sources indicated that many of the victims were killed in the Houla village of Taldaw in two separate incidents. Local residents blamed the killings on pro-regime militias known as shabiha, which sometimes act "in concert" with government forces, he said.

He said a fuller investigation was needed before he could comment on that, and called on Syria to allow free access to U.N. investigators.

The brutality of the killings and the high death toll raised new questions about the ability of a U.N.-brokered plan to end 15-months of violence in Syria.

In Damascus, international envoy Kofi Annan met with Assad on Tuesday to express "grave concern" about the Houla killings and other violence, said Annan's spokesman, Ahmad Fawzi. Annan said his plan cannot work without "bold steps" to stop the violence and release detainees.

According to the state-run news agency, SANA, Assad blamed terrorists and weapons smugglers for scuttling the peace plan. The regime denies there is any popular will behind the country's uprising, saying foreign extremists and terrorists are driving the unrest.

The new information provided by the U.N. draws attention to the role of the shabiha in 15 months of violence in Syria. Assad's government often deploys pro-regime thugs or armed militias to repress protests or carry out more military-style attacks on opposition areas.

They frequently work closely with soldiers and security forces, but the regime never acknowledges their existence, allowing it to deny responsibility for their actions.

A Syrian official denied again on Tuesday any involvement.

"It is irrational that any party who wants to make Annan's mission a success would ever commit such a massacre," Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad told reporters. He said Syria remained committed to Annan's plan and "had not committed a single violation."

Activists have posted videos of tanks and armored vehicles in the middle of cities, a violation of the plan, and U.N. observers said they found spent tank and artillery shells in Houla after the massacre there. Funeral videos also showed local rebels among the mourners ? making it unlikely they carried out the killings.

Anti-regime rebels around the country regularly attack military convoys and checkpoints, killing soldiers.

Syria's international isolation deepened in response to the killings. Governments around the world expelled Syrian ambassadors and diplomats Tuesday, an unusual, coordinated blow to Assad's regime.

The United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands took action Tuesday against Syrian diplomats. Britain's foreign secretary said the countries involved in Tuesday's expulsions would also push for tougher sanctions against Syria.

Longtime Syrian ally Russia has largely stood by Damascus, although Moscow is growing increasingly critical ? particularly over the Houla massacre. On Tuesday, however, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused unnamed countries of trying to use the Houla killings "as a pretext for taking military measures."

He said such nations sought to impede Annan's plan because it seeks dialogue between Syrians, not regime change.

Syria's unrest began in March 2011, with protests calling for political change. Government troops swiftly cracked down at the uprising spread, and many in the opposition have taken up arms to defend their towns and attack government troops.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Special envoy Kofi Annan on Monday called on "every individual with a gun" in Syria to lay down arms, saying he was horrified by a weekend massacre that killed more than 100 people, including women and small children.

Annan arrived in Damascus Monday for talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad and other senior officials in the wake of the bloodshed Friday night in Houla, a collection of villages in the central province of Homs.

"I am personally shocked and horrified by the tragic incident in Houla two days ago, which took so many innocent lives, children, women and men," Annan said as he arrived in the Syrian capital.

He called on all sides of the conflict to end the bloodshed, saying "this message of peace is not only for the government, but for everyone with a gun."

The mass killings in Houla ? one of the deadliest single events in the 15-month-old uprising ? prompted sweeping international criticism of the Syrian regime, although differences emerged from world powers over whether his forces were exclusively to blame. Syria's strong ally, Russia, said both the government and the rebels were to blame.

"Both sides have obviously had a hand in the deaths of innocent people, including several dozen women and children," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Monday. "This area is controlled by the rebels, but it is also surrounded by the governmental troops."

Lavrov spoke after talks with visiting British Foreign Secretary William Hague in Moscow.

Syria has strongly denied allegations that its forces carried out the killings, but the U.N. Security Council after an emergency session Sunday condemned government forces for shelling residential areas.

The brutality of the killings became clear in amateur videos posted online that showed scores of bodies, many of them young children, in neat rows and covered with blood and deep wounds. A later video showed the bodies, wrapped in white sheets, being placed in a sprawling mass grave.

The international rights group Human Rights Watch urged a swift investigation.

"There's no way a Syrian military commission can credibly investigate this horrendous crime when so much evidence suggests pro-government forces were responsible," said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East and North Africa director for the New York-based group. "Annan should insist that Syria grant access to the U.N. commission of inquiry to investigate this and other grave crimes."

The United Nations estimates that 9,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011, but hundreds more have been killed since the U.N. provided that figure.

On Monday, activists said Syrian troops shelled several neighborhoods in Hama until the early hours of the day, killing at least 24 people, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees activist groups said. Amateur videos showed a makeshift hospital where several people lay on the floor either dead or wounded. Further details were not immediately clear.

The Security Council issued a press statement Sunday that "condemned in the strongest possible terms" the killings in Houla. It blamed Syrian forces for artillery and tank shelling of residential areas. It also condemned the killings of civilians "by shooting at close range and by severe physical abuse," but avoided saying who was responsible for these attacks.

The council's statement said the "outrageous use of force" against civilians violated international law and Syrian government commitments under previous U.N. resolutions to stop all violence, including the use of heavy weapons in populated areas. It said "those responsible for acts of violence must be held accountable," and asked the U.N. observer mission in Syria and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to investigate the attacks and report back to the council.

Britain and France had proposed issuing a press statement condemning the attack on civilians and pointing the finger at the Syrian government for Friday's massacre. But Russia called for an emergency council meeting saying it first wanted a briefing by Maj. Gen. Robert Mood, the head of the unarmed U.N. observer mission.

The massacre in Houla cast fresh doubts on the ability of an international peace plan put forward by Annan to end Syria's crisis, which is in its 15th month.

Maj. Gen. Robert Mood, the head of the unarmed U.N. observer mission, told the Security Council that U.N. observers at the scene now estimate 108 people were killed in Houla, U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous told reporters outside the council chamber.

The U.N. counted 49 children and 34 women among the dead.

Activists from the Houla area said the army pounded the villages with artillery and clashed with local rebels after protests Friday. Some activists said pro-regime thugs later stormed the area, doing the bulk of the killing by gunning down men in the streets and stabbing women and children in their homes.

The Syrian government rejected that narrative Sunday, painting a vastly different picture.

Speaking to reporters in Damascus, Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said Syrian security forces were in their local bases Friday when they were attacked by "hundreds of heavily armed gunmen" firing mortars, heavy machine guns and anti-tank missiles, staring a nine-hour battle that killed three soldiers and wounded 16.

The soldiers fought back, but didn't leave their bases, he said.

"No Syrian tank or artillery entered this place where the massacres were committed," he said. "The security forces did not leave their places because they were in a state of self-defense."

Makdissi did not provide videos or other evidence to support his version of events, nor did he give a death toll. He said the government had formed a committee to investigate and share its findings with Annan, who is due to visit Damascus in the coming days.

Working on the internet is great, but it requires a lot of dedication and self discipline, far more than working at a conventional job. As you have nobody to rely on but yourself. However if you are able to overcome these obstacles and force yourself to focus and work at your business, you can grow it into a large internet marketing center.

You just have to remember that it takes time and not to get discouraged from the apparent lack of progress. It will make money as long as you work at it.

The Baca / Douglas Genealogy and Family History Blog: Close ...

Sometimes, I forget how few families arrived in Socorro in its early years. According to a letter sent in 1817 to the Governor of New Mexico by Javier Garcia and Anselmo Tafoya, there were 70 families that settled the Socorro area in 1815 or 1816. Although a few other families arrived a few years later, including the Santiago Torres family, there were still not many families around. And many of these families were already related either by blood or by marriage.

In my presentation to the Historical Society of New Mexico Conference this may, I indicated that my fourth great-grandmother Maria Guadalupe Torres married two men who were distant cousins. Guadalupe?s 1st husband Francisco Antonio Garcia Jurado was the half 2nd cousin, once removed of her 2nd husband Pedro Antonio Baca. These two cousins were related through Ramon Garcia Jurado, separately through his two wives.

Francisco Antonio Garcia Jurado is my fourth great-grandfather. Pedro Antonio Baca is not my ancestor.

What I had not realized, though, until I read a blog post written by my cousin Maurine Pool, was that Guadalupe?s brother Anastacio Torres married the niece of Guadalupe?s 1st husband Francisco Antonio Garcia Jurado. It wasn?t that I didn?t have that information in my database - after all Francisco Antonio?s niece was my 3rd great-grandmother - but I did not make the connection until I read the blog post.

As I said, many of these families were closely related either by blood or by marriage. No wonder I have so many instances of pedigree collapse in my ancestry.

97% Monsieur Lazhar

After Fran?ois Hollande?s victory in the last French presidential elections, Algerian flags have been seen in the Place de la Bastille. Not really surprising. Thousands of Algerians immigrate to France every year. An old French colony, Algeria is the second largest francophone country in the world. Although not an impressive number, approximately 50,000 people of Algerian origin reside in Canada today. The country is known for welcoming immigration, but you go a bit further and you discover that, differently for what is jokily said, they don?t beg people to live there, unless you fill in certain requirements. "Monsieur Lazhar" tells not only the story of an Algerian immigrant struggling to get political asylium in Canada, but the story of a multicutural and young country discovering its own identity and, consequently, its own limits and weaknesses. How many immigrants couldn?t repeat Alice?s words? "My school is beautiful. Maybe not the most beautiful, but it's mine. So...At first, when I started coming here, my mom kept saying how nice it was.Personally, I found it ok... But now, six years later, I also think it's really nice. Because it's mine. A big yard to play soccer and basketball, where parents drop their kids off in the morning. They take care of us, check to see if we have lice, how our teeth are, if we're aggressive or hyperactive. But this nice school is where Martine Lachance hanged herself. With her blue scarf from the big pipe on a Wednesday night. (...) Martine must've been discouraged with her life. The last thing she did was kick her chair to make it fall over. Sometimes I wonder if she wasn't sending a violent message." The anguish of relocation is algo the anguish of the kids having to deal with their teacher?s death. While some people fight for life, others give up without explanation. Here we have the opposition between Martine and Lazhar?s wife, between freedom and opression. Despite the differences, resamblances: their belongings. When Lazhar uses his wife?s stamp on assignments, he is taking Martine along with him.In the most majority of moves about teachers and students, the new teacher always brings a fresh air. Monsieur Lazhar, on the other hand, brings back the methods and rigor of old times, along, however, with a real passion for kids. Indirectly, the movie questions the modern teaching methods that include a constant parental intervention and that ultimately undermine the teacher-student relationship. Counting with an amazing leading actor and a great cast - if they made a remake of "My Girl', Sophie N?lisse just had to play Vada, due to her resemblance to that young Anna Chlumsky - "Monsieur Lazhar" perfectly balances fiction and reality, finding the accurate measure of drama required.

Investing in Facebook: John Corpus of Milyoni

This week, Inside Facebook asks people who have built businesses on the Facebook platform why they believe in the company. These are the people that are truly invested in Facebook, whether or not they bought stock.

For Part 2 of our series, we spoke with Milyoni founder and CEO John Corpus. Milyoni is the Facebook commerce and social entertainment company best known for making films and live events available for streaming on the social network.

Seeing the potential of Facebook

Three years ago when Corpus was CIO of Mervyns department store, he saw the rapid growth of Facebook as an opportunity for commerce. At the time, the social network had about 150 million users. Although that is far less than the more than 900 million using the site now, it was a major milestone in 2009. Corpus says the growth was especially interesting when compared with trends showing that online display and search conversions were declining.

?The three rules of retail are location, location, location,? Corpus says. ?Facebook was where people were spending more time.?

He says it was the amount of interaction and the speed of sharing happening on the site that stood out and led him to want to build a company on the platform.

Developing a business idea

When Corpus founded Milyoni (pronounced ?million-eye?) in February 2009, the company was focused on helping businesses sell physical goods. Milyoni offered the ?iFanStore,? an e-commerce platform for Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. It was one of the few e-commerce apps that let users stay within Facebook during an entire transaction and then share their activity with friends.

The company gained a lot of entertainment-focused clients, including HBO, the NBA, UFC and The Onion. These companies were selling things like t-shirts and DVDs through the app. But Corpus says that a conversation with Warner Bros., at the end of 2010, led to a whole new market: digital goods.

Milyoni and Warner Bros. were discussing how video was incorporated in the app when an executive asked whether a full feature could be shared on Facebook. The companies decided to try it, and in March 2011, they made ?The Dark Knight? available for streaming on Facebook with users paying for the rental using Facebook?s platform currency, Credits. The success of that test and others led Milyoni to develop what it calls ?Social Cinema? for movies and ?Social Live? for things like concerts and sporting events. The company is now primarily focused on these areas rather than selling physical goods through Facebook.

Confidence in Facebook

Corpus says Milyoni could expand to other platforms in the future, but for now it?s focused on Facebook.

?This is not a fly-by-night type of business,? Corpus says, pointing to Facebook?s latest user numbers and engagement statistics, which includes 300 million photo uploads and 3.2 billion Likes per day. ?From a foundational standpoint, they?re here to stay.?

Milyoni?s own success on the platform is further proof for Corpus, who says Facebook users have watched more than 700,000 minutes of Milyoni content in the past three months. The company now offers more than 150 titles from 16 studios available on Facebook, and it plans to bring 700 more titles and 30 more live events to the platform this year.

Facebook?s future

To capitalize on the social network?s growth in users and engagement, Facebook now has to focus on growing its revenue streams through advertising, mobile and commerce, Corpus says. Social games were a good start, but he says there is a lot more opportunity around social entertainment where studios and other content providers can connect directly with their consumers.

Facebook?s payments revenue was $186 million in the first quarter of 2012, up 98 percent compared to the first quarter of 2011 when Credits were not mandatory for social games transactions. However, most of that revenue is still from sales of virtual goods, not digital goods or experiences. Milyoni is one of the few companies helping to pioneer the use of Credits outside the realm of games. Corpus says the social network needs to do more to get users to understand Credits so that they are more comfortable using the currency and spending money within apps. He sites PayPal as an example of another company that took a few years before it was widely considered secure. Corpus says that making it easier for users to see and manage their Credits accounts could help Facebook in this area.

?They have to let people know it?s not just Monopoly money,? Corpus says. ?They have to provide people with a level of confidence and security to make it a more trustworthy place.?

A new report that is based on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) reveals that cigarette use amongst minors has dropped from 11.9% in 2004 to 8.3% in 2010 (the year with the latest available data), and that of young adults decreased from 39.5% in 2004 to 34.2% in 2010, although a considerable percentage of both minors and young adults are currently still smoking. Companies Fight Back Against Negative Online Reviews ? CBS Miami

MIAMI (CBS4) ? The next time you leave a review online for a company, be warned: you might get a phone call from the business asking you to take it down. Some companies are fighting back against negative critiques and sometimes not in a nice way.

More and more critical consumers have reported that they have received phone calls from companies who monitor their online reviews and have been asked to take down their negative comments but the angry tone has some customers on the defensive.

For Eric Winick, it all began when he left a mixed online review about a restaurant. He raved about the food, but said he grew frustrated that it took an hour to be served.

?I said in the review that they had taken a ridiculously long time to bring the food,? Winick said.

He was even more alarmed when he received an email from the restaurant?s owner which asked him to take it down.

?He said that something along the lines of ?We?re trying to make a go of it in this area, we all have families to feed? and sort of trying to prey on my sympathies a little bit.?

Many businesses around the country are reaching out to customers who leave bad reviews and they are not always trying to make amends. In an extreme example, an Atlanta restaurant launched Facebook and Twitter campaigns identifying a customer who left a bad review and the food fight went viral.

Social media expert Patrick O?Malley said that the effect of the web posts can make or break a company?s reputation.

?A single person can now go home and get on Facebook and tell 500 or 1000 people what they think of your restaurant,? O?Malley said.

The impact is immense. A Harvard Business School study found that even a one star increase on a businesses? rating on the online review site Yelp led to a five to nine percent boost in revenue for independent restaurants.

?In the last few years, it has changed the way we have done business,? said Zalmi Duchman, the founder of FreshDiet.com.

He is among business owners who have requested to remove bad reviews and he explains to customers how damaging negative comments can be. He said sometimes it?s effective.

?We?ve found in the past the faster you react to the customer the better chance you?re going to have to get that customer to remove their negative review because they see you take their comments and their feedback seriously,? Duchman said.

Online review site Urban Spoon said it actually encourages businesses and reviewers to connect and warns customers many companies take what they type very seriously.

?For a small business their business is an extension of who they are. There?s a real emotional connection to that,? Kara Nortman, of Urban Spoon.

For Winick, he responded to the restaurant and indicated that he wouldn?t remove his review. The business apologized for reaching out, but didn?t offer any incentive for him to return and give them another chance.

?I thought it was a waste of time, frankly, on the part of the restaurant to do that,? Winick said.
