Sofia Vergara: the unofficial spokeswoman for the small percentage of petite Americans with big busts

Two months ago I walked into Neiman Marcus? lingerie department in San Diego and asked the sales woman if she had any bras in my size, 28G. Like a deleted scene from Pretty Woman, she treated me as if I was a pair of Lucite platforms away from a highway strip club.

"Oh, we don?t do that here," she said with a hint of embarrassment. ?She then proceeded to fold the dime-sized A-cup she had just sold to a normal customer.

In theory, the United States likes large breasts. In practice, the United Stastes likes large breasts as long as they?re on the right body. That means bigger women have bigger chests, smaller women have smaller chests. The average American bra size was once a 34B, now it?s a 36D, according to Tomima Edmark, founder of online lingerie retailer HerRoom. (There is some dispute on this: Women?s Wear Daily cited the median in 2010 as 36DD.) Breasts have grown and so have waistlines; bigger women, bigger chests.

But then there?s me. And then there?s Sofia Vergara. In the September issue of Allure, the self-satirizing Colombian and resident Modern Family babe inadvertently became the spokeswoman for the small percentage of petite Americans with big busts when she admitted she has difficulty finding bras in her size, 32F. Vergara sometimes has to settle for a more common 34DD because of the dearth of lingerie in her dimensions, which, according to intimate apparel professional Moira Nelson, the bra industry calls ?full-busted??defined as a small band size (36 and under) with a large cup size (DDD and over). (Full-busted as opposed to ?full-figured? or ?plus-sized,? which both refer to 38 bra bands and up.)

"Nobody with real boobs usually has those measurements," Vergara told Allure. And she?s right. In the context of the American bra industry, being ?full busted? is about as unusual as Gloria Pritchett's argot.

As I learned that day in Neimans, full-busted bras are often associated with plastic tits. Even feminist website Jezebel once quipped, "it's important that we separate the woman with a 28-inch band and G cups from the woman who wears a 36C, because one may be a hot porn star with implants, while the other is just a fatty."

Nelson, founder of lingerie industry website Bra La Mode and the Lingerie Alliance, an online community made up of intimate apparel industry pros, confirmed for me what I already know: ?"Most of the brands that cater to the full-busted market are in the UK and Europe," she told me. ?Very few American brands carry full-busted sizes at all and only a handful actually caters to this consumer.?

Though there appear to be no definitive statistics on the average bra size in the UK, in 2009 British department store Debenhams concluded the average bra band was 34 after polling 250,000 women in the country. Meanwhile, British lingerie manufacturer Triumph conducted a survey in 2007, which revealed that more than 50 percent of UK women need a D cup or more. These results together suggest that British women are slightly more full-busted on average than American women (with Liverpool boasting an average size of 34E and Newcastle 34DD).

The few homegrown brands that do service the full-busted American woman?such as Aviana, Glamorise and Lunaire, which can be found at JCPenney and Macy?s?rarely offer bands below a 32 or cups bigger than a G. I know this from experience as well as reporting. Like I said, I?m a 28G and there are only two U.S. bras I could conceivably wear in a pinch: California brands Parfait by Affinitas, which sells 30-40 D-G sizes in specialty stores and online (I can wear a 30FF if I have to), and Claudette, which also offers 30G bras online and in various boutiques across the country. This year Claudette is looking to add sizes up to 28K (the fullest bust the bra market appears to sell), according to an interview on the Full Figured Chest blog. But those brands are only a tiny drop in the Unites States? swelling ocean of lingerie.

UN Ambassador Susan Rice said Sunday she doubts the deadly attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, was a pre-planned Al Qaeda operation that could have been detected. As protests to an anti-Islam video continued, some knowledgeable lawmakers aren't so sure.

The violent protest in the wake of an anti-Islam YouTube video "seems to have been hijacked, let us say, by some individual clusters of extremists who came with heavier weapons," UN Ambassador?Susan Rice said Sunday, noting that rocket-propelled grenades and other weapons are easily obtained in Libya following the fall of Muammar Qaddafi.

Speaking on "Fox News Sunday,? Ambassador Rice asserted that the US had no ?actionable intelligence? that might have alerted officials to the attack in Benghazi, which killed US Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other embassy personnel.

That?s a key point, addressing at least indirectly the question of whether State Department and Defense Department assets could have been deployed to protect or remove US diplomatic personnel in Benghazi before the ultimately deadly protest occurred.

Forty-eight hours?before the protests in Cairo and Benghazi, US intelligence officials sent a cable to the embassy in Egypt warning of the YouTube video and the reaction it might cause, according to a CNN report, but the cable was not sent to the embassy in Tripoli, Libya or the consulate in Benghazi. Like many US diplomatic outposts, the Benghazi consulate relied on local security forces.

Whether or not it was Al Qaeda per se, the organization has cooperated with terrorist groups worldwide including ?The Libyan Islamic Fighting Group,? according to GlobalSecurity.org. In a 2008 cable made public by WikiLeaks, Ambassador Stevens described the Libyan port city of Derna (in the eastern part of the country, as is Benghazi) as "a wellspring of Libyan foreign fighters" for Al Qaeda in Iraq.

BELLINGHAM ? The sweet smell of marijuana has been in the air here, from Teddy Bear Cove to the top of Sehome Hill, since college and high school students and counterculture types took to smoking cannabis in the late 1960s.

A very different crowd gathered Friday night at a home in the affluent Edgemoor neighborhood.? Civic leaders, political types and lawyers were raising money for Initiative 502, which would legalize and regulate the growing and sale of marijuana to adults.

?Anyone who has ever written a criminal justice budget can see that marijuana laws are ineffective and costly, and haven?t solved the problem:? We are arresting and imprisoning the wrong people,? said Bellingham Mayor Kelli Linville.

Mike Estes, chairman of the Whatcom County Democratic Party, added:? ?We?re a border county.? That makes us aware of the underlying criminal element that has moved in.? It is a higher priority for people in Whatcom County than other entities.?

The party underscored a claim that marijuana is a ?gateway? drug ? in this case a gateway to a taste for good wine.? Such vintages as a fine Covey Run syrah were being poured.? The 1930s movie ?Reefer Madness,? a warning against cannabis that was untrue and is today seen as comical, played silently on a screen.

There were also brownies ? without.

The good cheer belied a serious purpose.? The drive to legalize and regulate pot is being driven, in part, by evidence of heightened gang activity on both sides of the 49th parallel.

Relaxing with a glass of white wine, Godden recalled when she first ran for the council in 2003.? Seattle voters were also deciding on city Initiative 75, which directed that simple possession of marijuana be put lowest on the city?s list of law enforcement priorities.

At a forum in Plymouth Congregation Church, Godden was the only council candidate to hold up a card signifying support for the initiative.? ?That?s only in 2003, and things have changed quite a bit since then,? she said.

Personal Attention

How much personal attention will your son or daughter get? To consider this, take into consideration the number of children in the classroom. Divide the number of minutes he or she will be at the facility by the number of children present during that time. You want to be sure there is plenty of time available to your child so that he or she can ask questions, interact properly, get cared for as needed and never suffer any safety setback because of not being cared for properly.

It is a big task for any facility to take on. Your demands should be high. You should expect your children to have everything they need to reach their potential when they arrive at the facility. If the child care provider cannot offer this, look for another one that can. The more you know about the location and its day-to-day activities, the more likely you are to find the place you actually feel comfortable dropping your child off at each day.
