Wind Farms Linked to Local Climate Change [Climate]

Wind power, one the oldest and most established forms of alternative energy, might not be as green as we thought. A new study in the US has linked wind farms to local temperature rises of over 0.7?C—enough to change local weather and climate. More »

Mozilla dispatches Firefox 3.6, fills its chair with version 13 beta

If you've been defiantly clinging onto Firefox 3.6 by your fingertips, bad news. Mozilla is officially putting it to sleep -- whether you like it or not -- by auto-updating users to version 12. You've still got a few days to bid your emotional farewells, with the switchover being pegged as early May. But, the browser's creators stop short of setting a date for you to get the flowers delivered by. Official support for the 2010 release finished this week, and the final bout of security fixes was back in January. At the other end of the spectrum, Firefox 13 wobbled up onto its beta legs yesterday, bringing a new homepage, Google's new SPDY protocol and tab extra features with it. If you're making the leap, don't panic if you find some old friends missing.

Sony's Alpha A37 and NEX-F3 pose for the camera, reveal more angles, details

Well, well, talk about déjà vu! It was just yesterday that a corner of Sony's 16.1 megapixel NEX-F3 leaked onto the interwebs and now more photos have surfaced, along with a previously unannounced shooter, the Alpha A37 SLT. The pictures come courtesy of Yang Canggih, which says it had a chance to demo the two devices yesterday at Sony's Partner's Conference in Jakarta (curiously, the NEX-F3 post isn't live as of this writing, but Sony Alpha Rumors has the images up). Starting with the F3, the mirrorless camera has lost a smidgen of the curves found on its older sibling, the C3, adopting a slight bit of the angular edges that once made the NEX-7 the badass standout in the lineup. You'll notice that the shutter button and grip have an uncanny resemblance to the 7's, not to mention that it's clearly gained a pop-up flash -- a first for the lower-end NEXs. Past that, the rumored -- and self-portrait friendly -- 180 degree tilt-screen is also present, which'll likely give the C3 an edge over its siblings when it comes to composing shots. Also worth note, some of the buttons on back have been slightly repositioned.

Moving along, those hoping for a successor to the A35 will apparently have their wish granted with the 16.1 megapixel A37. According to Yang Canggih, it features the articulating display from the last generation of NEX cams, Auto Portrait Framing (first introduced with the A57), four more effect modes than the A35 (up from 11) and an ergonomic grip in the vein of the A77. Sadly, that's about all that's currently known, so hopefully we'll get an official introduction to the cameras soon. Head past the break for a shot of the A37 and then check out the links below for even more of both.

Giuliana and Bill Rancic Speak on Surrogate

Giuliana and Bill Rancic, who have opened up about their struggle to have a child in the last few years, announced Monday that they're finally expecting a baby.

They've bonded with the woman who is making it happen, too.

"She is giving us the greatest gift we're ever getting in our lives," Giuliana, 37, says of the couple's surrogate, whose identity has not been revealed.

"She's selflessly helping make our dream a reality. We adore her."

Giuliana and Bill Photo

The gestational surrogate is carrying their child, but it will be their biological offspring. Giuliana's struggles to achieve a viable pregnancy are well documented.

Asked if they plan to stay in touch with the woman once their child is born, Bill says, "That will be up to her, but we are very grateful for what she's done."

"We intend to maintain a relationship with her."

The couple admit they were quite nervous about picking a surrogate before they met the woman they chose, but they clicked with her immediately.

"Once we met her it was an instinct," says Giuliana. "We could tell she was a great person." Bill adds that the Rancics attend her doctor's appointments:

"It's important to us to see the development and growth. At the end of the day, it's our baby. Genetically it's ours. It's our embryo. We feel very connected."

For now the parents-to-be are relishing keeping the baby's gender a secret – but they know, and may not be able to keep it for the duration of the pregnancy.

"When you do a reality show and host shows, it's hard to have secrets. Its nice to have something that only the two of us know for now," says Giuliana.

However, "Eventually we may tell people."

Britney Spears' Fiance Granted Legal Control Of Singer

Jason Trawick is a co-conservator of the pop star along with her dad, Jamie Spears.

Britney Spears' fiancé, Jason Trawick, has been granted his wish to become her co-conservator. The talent agent's request was approved by a Los Angeles judge Wednesday (April 25).

Spears' former agent-turned-paramour petitioned the Los Angeles Superior Court earlier this month to become the pop star's co-conservator. He will share the responsibility with Spears' father, Jamie Spears, who has maintained legal control of his daughter since February 2008.

According to People magazine, Spears' father is delighted with the court's decision. "Jamie's thrilled," attorney Geraldine Wyle told reporters following the hearing, referring to Spears' father. "It's all in the family."

Wyle also made a point to clarify the fact that the request to add Trawick as co-conservator came at Britney's request, not her father's. The 41-year-old will not have control of Spears' multimillion-dollar estate or career but will share responsibility with Jamie Spears for the singer's "general well-being," including decisions regarding food, clothing and medical care.

Jamie Spears took steps to gain legal control over his daughter's affairs in 2008 following a spate of increasingly erratic behavior that culminated in Britney's brief stay at UCLA Medical Center. In the years since, Spears has appeared to get her life solidly back on track, releasing two multiplatinum albums, launching two successful world tours and regaining custody of her young sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James.

The current status of Spears' conservatorship is reportedly more of a "formality" than anything else.

Trawick, Spears' former agent and co-star in her "Criminal" video, proposed to Spears in December on his 40th birthday with a four-carat diamond ring designed by Neil Lane.

Optimizing LinkedIn: Three Quick Ideas For Growing Your Business ...

Why ?boost? your network? One of the main reasons users find themselves drawn to LinkedIn is the possibility of expanding upon their current professional contact-base and reaching out to new people in their industry.

While sending out invitations to people you?ve done business with is one way of boosting the size and quality of your network, the number of limitations you can send is by default limited, and it?s contrary to LinkedIn?s User Agreement to send invites to people who you haven?t, in some guise, done business with (in practice, this qualified by the existence of LIONs ? LinkedIn open networkers ? who have expressed an interest in receiving connection invitations from people who they don?t know).

  • Another way to boost the size and reach of your LinkedIn network is to make your profile as attractive and interesting as possible to other users.
  • The only limit to the number of connections you can foster through this method is your own discernment in choosing what connections to reject and which to accept, and there exists the added potential to strike up connections with people who you mightn?t have found while searching out new contacts under your own steam.

Here then are three quick tips that have worked for me to build up relationships with often unexpected but professionally useful second parties, and increased my ?views per day? metric indicating interest in my profile.

As a warning: I don?t recommend accepting too many invitation requests from people you don?t know, or have no interest in knowing.?The existence of LinkedIn spammers ? who add connections simply to collate e-mail addresses to opt-in to massive e-mailing lists ? seems to be growing by the day,?and unless you want to be making daily use of the ?unsubscribe? button, your inbox will soon be flooded with useless, and unwanted, promotional emails from people who invited you simply to try sell their latest e-book, workshop, etc

# 1. Use piped up (|) headlines!

Use the pipe button in your headline.?Pipe (|), also known as a vertical bar, perhaps best known to traditionalists for its use in mathematics and physics, is in fact also a popular symbol in computer programming and logic, and now, in LinkedIn profiles!

Adding a few vertical bars into your professional headlines (the line summary below your name) is an eye-catching way of displaying a few pieces of information about yourself without needing space-consuming conjunctions (?and?, etc) or punctuation marks (full stops, commas) to divide the sentence.

In my experience on LinkedIn this kind of headline seems to be used predominantly by serial online networkers, so while it could be argued that it lends a ?spammy? kind of feel to your profile, the fact that it is used by a lot of high-connection users could also be an indication of its usefulness in conveying as many short bytes of data into a profile headline as possible.

Brendan Hayes? (JCI Cork) headline below is an instructive example of this in practice.

(Screenshot: from Cork JCI member and first connection, Brendan Hayes)

  • Finding a quick and grammatically tidy way of mentioning things as disparate as community activism and your budding career in the legal profession would be difficult ? particularly within the confines of what should optimally be a one-line tag-on to your name.
  • The two pipe symbols instead provide a natural and eye-catching division of Brendan?s three main areas of professional involvement, and neatly encapsulates them into something that renders as only one line of text.

# 2. Write a clean, well-formatted summary

A clean, well laid out summary is akin to a quick ?executive summary? of your page; and given that part of the goal of LinkedIn for jobseekers is to bring their skillset to the attention of busy people like executives, this shouldn?t be a neglected part of what you put up.

Formatting and type-wise, a variety of approaches can help break down your summary into little digestible bites, in addition to clearly divided paragraphs, which should certainly be used.

  • The humble asterisks (*) is ubiquitous but also somewhat dated looking; this symbol (?), a kind of emboldened left-to-right bullet, creates quite a strong impression, while interpuncts (?), n-dashes (?) and their slightly wider brethren, m-dashes (?) are all convincing and effective ways of leading into short paragraphs.
  • Opinions differ as to how exactly the text itself should be written. Many will vouch for filling the section with third-person blurb (?John is a committed, dedicated, professional? is a typical example), but the inevitable deluge of positive adjectives can create a very self-promoting feel to the whole thing. Others will do the same only in the first-person (?I am a committed, dedicated, professional?) but this can also feel quite false.
  • Others again have a penchant for writing in grammatical fragments (?Committed, dedicated, professional.?) but this can begin to read quite unusually if the section drags on for long enough.

My personal favourite is for something quite conventional, that avoids any of the possible pitfalls set out above.?Writing in full sentences, rather than fragments, very rarely reads strangely; setting out your abilities seems to be sufficient self-promotion to capture others? attention, without pairing in jaded adjectives like ?dependable?, ?hard-working?,? industrious?, ?disruptive?, etc, and the combination of short paragraphs and division symbols ensures easy reading.

I like this summary from Clive Aherne, a chartered accountant by training, current owner at TaxAssist.ie accountants in Cork City, and a well known figure on the local startup and enterprise scene there.

  • Clive?s summary gives a quick introduction on his background in accountancy; name-drops?Price Waterhouse Coopers, where he was ?promoted to senior manager?, and then gives an extensive, bullet pointed, plug for his business.
  • It?s an honest, informative, and very readable summary, culminating in a fairly enticing pitch to use?TaxAssist for your business accountancy needs.

# 3. Being active in groups

Being active in LinkedIn groups has a few great benefits.

  • Firstly, it allows you to use mutual group membership as an option when inviting a new connection.
  • Secondly, it allows you to comment on discussions that mutually interest you and your fellow group members, which is often all that is needed to sow the seeds for the beginning of a new business relationship and ongoing ?connection?.
  • Closed (request-only) groups are particularly useful in this respect as they are often moderated by managers who ensure that only people actually involved in what they claim they are are allowed ?membership?.

Examples, within the realm of Irish media, include:

Groups needn?t be moderated to ensure that they target a niche market, however, and plenty of specialists groups can be found where people can strike up a relationship based on some mutual interest, which needn?t even necessarily be professional in nature.

Professionally, groups can often hone in on very narrow professional interests which makes them a very useful way of developing professional contacts in that catchment.?Examples in this bracket:

With $1.3M From Voyager & More, Chirpify Brings Direct Music, Ticket Sales To Twitter

howitworks_band_3In February, Chirpify rebranded from SellSimp.ly and launched a Twitter commerce platform that allowed brands and consumers to buy, sell, donate and transact through tweets without leaving the comfort of Twitter. Since launch, Chirpify has seen growing traction, thanks in part to a promotional campaign launched at SXSW, called "Tweet-a-Beer," which resulted in a huge boost of traffic for Chirpify, with two new users signing up every second. Today, the startup's direct sales model for Twitter is officially getting further validation -- this time in the form of capital -- as the startup announced that it has secured $1.3 million in series A financing. The new round of investment, which adds to the $50K in seed it raised from its incubator Upstart Labs, was led by Voyager Capital, with participation from Geoff Entress, BuddyTV CEO Andy Liu, former Facebook exec Rudy Gadre, Hootsuite CEO Ryan Holmes, and TiE Oregon Angels.

The Real Housewives of New Jersey Season 4 Premiere Recap: High Tides, Low Blows

The Real Housewives of New Jersey are back and the feuding continues, but this time they're leaving their McMansions and taking it down to the Jersey shore.

Let's assess all the cussing, name calling, and backstabbing in THG +/- review!

It looks like no one has talked much since Teresa Guidice's infamous cookbook came out. Between the digs about her being as Italian as the Olive Garden and rehashing her son's brilliant idea for a strip car wash, Caroline Manzo is still pretty ticked off.

The Real Housewives of NJ

The two women end up meeting at a party at Jacqueline's and Caroline's doing an admirable job of freezing Teresa out but Teresa wants to talk. She says she wants to clear the air. Minus 10 because why wait for a family party to do that?

Why not just pick up the phone or go on over to Caroline's? I suppose the show wouldn't be fun if any of it made sense.

So Teresa apologizes…sort of.

"I think you misread it because if you really read it good you'd realize I didn't insult you." Really?  hat's your idea of an apology? Telling someone you didn't read it good? Minus 15 and I'm not even counting the grammar issues.

Teresa just keeps repeating that it was all a joke but Teresa's the only one who finds it funny.

And apparently this is not a good time to be messing with Caroline. She's going though menopause and isn't thrilled when her doctor tells her she's getting old. Plus 8 because even she admits she may go super bitch on someone who crosses her right now.

But it's the start of a long season and Caroline agrees to co-exist and move forward. Let's see how long that lasts.

Melissa Gorga seems to be serious about getting along with her crazy sister-in-law. She doesn't even want to hear about the cookbook anymore so Plus 7 for making the effort. But Kathy's husband Rich can't help but cause trouble and brings it up every chance he gets.

Of course even Melissa's resolve is tested when her hubby tells her that Teresa says Melissa would leave Joe in a heartbeat if a richer guy came along. When Joe asked her why she said it, Teresa's response is she heard it somewhere. Minus 11. The more Teresa talks the more I think she's nothing but stupid and mean.

The whole crew, minus the Manzo's travel down to the Jersey shore for the weekend and we get quite the inside view of the Guidice home as they prepare for their trip.

Teresa's yelling for Gia to help find her sister's iTouch and the little one is calling Gia a stupid whore. But Teresa did make her say she was sorry. Seriously?!?

The kid's about six years old and she's calling her sister a stupid whore! What's she going to be saying when she's 13? Minus 22. Sorry indeed.

On the car trip down, Joe tells Teresa that he didn't come home because he was hanging out with some girls the night before…but it was a business thing.

Yeah, even 11-year-old Gia isn't buying it. And that's the bigger problem. Gia's not a baby and she's not an idiot. I can only imagine what the kids at school say to her. They read the magazines and watch TV and there's so much stuff out there now.

So how does Teresa choose to handle it? By sticking her head in the sand the way she does everything else. Teresa and Joe decide the kids are too young to understand so why bother talking to them about it. Minus 15.

Umm, when your 11-year-old has to ask why the magazine cover says Daddy's cheating you've got big problems.

Joe's response to all this. He tells Gia to shut up and tells Teresa she knew this was the life when she signed on. Joe's a jackass who's never going to change. Minus 13.

And that gives me a new word to describe Teresa. To mean and stupid you can add sad. Very, very sad.

Next to the Guidices, the Gorgas appear almost normal and isn't that scary. Joe is teaching Gino how to use the potty like a big boy. As much as Joe Gorga makes my skin crawl on occasion, he seems like a good dad who adores his kids and his wife so Plus 12 for that.

But what was he thinking about that shore house? It's going to be perfectly nice once it's done but those kids can't stay there now with the construction equipment and the green pool. Minus 9.

Joe tries to tell Teresa that he'll be there for her if her husband goes to prison but somehow it ends up in a mess of misunderstandings. Minus 5. What else is new.

Back at Jacqueline's she's see a life coach to try and deal with the mess Ashley is making of her life and the ripple effect it's having on everyone else. Ash is now platinum blonde and getting tattoos and piercings.

The girl looks like a spoiled 15-year-old acting out not a 20-something starting her life and it's taking it's toll on Jacqueline and Chris' marriage.

So what's the solution? Chris has agreed to send Jacqueline away to relatives in Las Vegas? Plus 10. At least he didn't buy her another car. He's finally doing something but is this just pushing the problem off on somebody else? Maybe the change of scenery will help but will we really not see Ashley this season?

Somehow I'm sure the rest of the cast will give us so much drama that we won't even miss her.
